Miles Davis was born on May 25, 1926 in Alton, Illinois. He was playing trumpet by age 10 and later performed in his high school band and local jazz groups. At 18 he travelled to New York to attend the Julliard School of Music, but dropped out in order to spend more time in the city’s blossoming jazz scene. Davis would join Charlie Parker on several late ‘40s albums recorded in New York and California. In 1948 he started his own nine-piece band, which he left after the 1949 recording Birth of the Cool. During the mid-‘50s Davis released several albums with a quintet he formed with saxophonist John Coltrane. In 1958 the two formed a new sextet and over the next few years recorded groundbreaking albums such as Milestones and Kind of Blue. In 1964 Davis formed a more experimental quintet with pianist Herbie Hancock. The group strayed from more traditional jazz and eventually ended up with the 1969 recording Bitches Brew. Over the next decade Davis would produce mostly jazz-rock material that tended to alienate jazz critics while gaining him new fans. He continued to record and tour throughout the ‘80s. Miles Davis passed away in September of 1991 at the age of 65. [source: Rolling Stone]
