Straight from the slums of Shaolin, Wu-Tang Clan strikes again...
The Wu-Tang Clan gets its name from a mythical band of upstart kung-fu students. Over
the last few years, the Clan has taken the hip-hop world by storm with the hardcore beats
and eerie samples supplied by the RZA. The New York based group formed in early ’91
and soon after released their first single, Protect Ya Neck. The track was released
independently by the Clan and caught on in underground circles. When several record
labels courted the group, they held out for an unprecedented contract that would allow
each individual member to produce with the record label of their choice, while the
collaborative albums featuring all of the Clan would be released under RCA’s Loud label.
Enter the Wu-Tang debuted in 1993 and paved the way for the success of the 5 solo
albums that quickly followed. All went gold or even platinum. In 1997 the group’s
second collaboration, Wu-Tang Forever, was released. It earned the Clan its first grammy
nomination for best Rap Album.
