CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT:
This department was the first to be started in the year 1942.Since then it has been producing world class Engineers, many of whom hold prominent positions in the industry.This department has also pioneered advanced research in fields like wastewater treatment,computational fluid dynamics,heat transfer,mass transfer,etc.
This department produces about 65 engineers every year of which maximum get absorbed in the industry while some pursue further studies.
Dr. R.L.Sonolikar is the Head of this department.
The core chemical engineering subjects included in the present curriculum are:
- Technology of Oils,Fats,Surfactants.
- Food Technology.
Petroleum Refining and Petrochemical Technology.
Plastic and Polymer Technology.
Surface Coating Technology.
Pulp and Paper technology.
*Apart from their specific subjects of respective technologies,the students of chemical technology also study the regular core chemical engineering subjects.
3. A three semester post-graduation degree course leading to M.Tech. degree in the following branches.
- Chemical Engineering.
Petroleum Refining and Petrochemical Technology.
Food Technology.
Paint Technology.
Oil Technology.
A one year post-graduation diploma course in food Technology.
The Mtech. research program was started in the early 70's.It has earned its own recognition in National and International level.
The core chemical engineering subjects included in the present curriculum are:
- Modelling of reactors and optimisation techniques.
Equipment Design.
Thermodynamics.
Advanced Reaction Engineering.
Momentum and unsteady state heat transfer.
Advanced process control.
Environmental Engineering.
Biotechnology.
Plastic and Polymer technology department of L.I.T was started in year 1995 .In these years the department has made it's recognition as a quality education giver in Maharastra and eleswhere. Dr.K.K.Sonune, Head of the Department, has brought some major changes in the department.Now the laboratory is open 24 hours a day and is well equipped with all latest instruments like Polymer tensile tester, Hardness tester, Electronic viscometer and many other accessories. More stress is given on the practical knowledge for the students. For that purpose, industrial training for students is given in 3rd year. Industrial tours are also arranged to know the hows and whys of industries.Students are provided with all the latest journals and books on Plastics and Polymers.

Polymer processing.
Polymer blends.
Polymer Rheology.
Rubber technology.
Recruitment of the students of the department is almost 100%.
The department of oil technology came into existence in the year 1942.The objective was to produce world class oil technologists.It has definitely been serving its purpose since its inception.Dr.B.B.Gogte ,the Head of this department has been instrumental in pursuing advanced research in this Lab.About 10 students graduate every year from this department and are either absorbed in industry or pursue further research.
The subjects included in the curriculum are:
- Oil Chemistry,processing(refining ,bleaching ,hydrogenation,solvent
extraction.)
Paint technology, surfactants, cosmetics.
The Department of Pulp and Paper came into existence in the year 1976 in this institute with the view to cater the ever increasing needs of cellulose based industries in general and pulp and paper industries in particular.The students who have passed out from this department have been absorbed as Engineering Trainees or Technologists, in Pulp and Paper, Textile and Chemical Industries with many of them holding top posts.
The subjects included in the curriculum are:
- Wood preparation for pulping.
Pulping washing bleaching and screening.
Recovery of chemicals and steam.
Stock preparation.
Paper and board manufacture.
Testing of pulp and paper.
Monitoring and control of pollution.
Recent trends in pulp and paper making.
FOOD TECHNOLOGY:
Department of food technology was established in the year 1971 with the objective to train students in the field of food technology.The curriculum is revised from time to time in order to keep up with the current trends and needs of the industry.The course has been introduced to stimulate the growth and functioning of Indian Food industry through the most efficient utilisation of nation's food resources. It aims at development of food products and processes for optimal utilisation of the country's agriculture procedure, food processing machinery for indigineous industry and packaging techniques for food material and processed items;utilisation of residual waste/byproducts of the food industry;development of export-oriented value added productivity by way of producing highly skilled food technologists.The subjects included in the present curriculum are:
- Fundamental and applied aspects of Food technology.
Food chemistry ,Bio chemistry ,Microbiology, Nutrition, Food processing.
Principle of food preservation.
Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology.
PETROLEUM
REFINING AND PETROCHEMICAL AND TECHNOLOGY:
This Department also known as the "petro"department was established in the year 1971. It was established with a foresight of producing world class petrochemical technologists and for pioneering research.Dr.M.S.Wagh ,the Head of this department has been instrumental for the progress of this department.About 10 petrochemical technologists graduate every year from this department.
The subjects included in the present curriculum are:
Exploration and production of gas and oil.
Analysis and testing .
Distillation of various petroleum products.
Petroleum refining engineering.
Petrochemical engineering process analysis.
Catalytic deactivation.
Fluidisation.
Debottlenecking.
