Real Music is the cross-pollination of:

"Alternative"
My favorite band is Pearl Jam. I have around 14 Pearl Jam CDs. If you like them on their regular albums, then you should hear them live. They were voted by Rolling Stone as the #1 live band in the US (or so I heard).

I also like Nirvana, Bush (liked them before they were popular), Everclear (also liked them early), Soundgarden (before they broke up), Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys (where else do you put them?), etc.

Ska
I will note that I liked ska before it was popular. For that I have to give a huge thank you to Marc Wallenstein. He is the biggest ska fan I have ever met. I like some second wave stuff (Specials, Madness, etc.), but my favorite is third wave. I love the Suicide Machines, Mephiskapheles, Bouncing Souls, etc.

Punk
I like two main punk bands: Fugazi and Quiksand. I did discover these for myself. I also like a lot of punk that I hear, but don't really know who it is.

Rock
The main band here is Metallica. I have to say, they are amazing live. Perhaps the best live shows I have seen are Metallica. I also like Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, and Oasis. Oasis is really good live, much better than their albums.

"White Rap"
I can't think of a better way to categorize it. I really like Rage Against the Machine and the Beastie Boys. It's not quite on the level of Snoop Dog, or Dre, or Puff Daddy, and just "alternative" enough to be cool. I don't really know why I like this music, but I do. Why try to explain it?

Dave Matthews Band and Beck
They go here because they don't fit in any other categories. I really like Dave, and like Pearl Jam, he is amazing live. As for Beck, he's so weird he's cool. I would suggest buying Odelay, no matter who you like.
