CULTS defined

The cult can be regarded as a world-rejecting or a world-affirming religious body, depending on the specific group. A religious cult virtually defies definition and because of its close affinity to a sect, more inclusive terms such as new religion, alternative religion and fringe religion might be more appropriate, though they are rather cumbersome and vague.

Various Definitions:

Was Matthias the leader of a cult?
There is a thin line between the labels utopian community and cult. These sites say that Matthias was indeed the leader of a cult.

Random Info: Eleven members of the Branch Davidian religious cult were found not guilty, Feb. 26, 1994, of murder and conspiracy charges in the deaths of 4 federal agents in a 1993 shootout at the cult’s compound near Waco, TX (Encarta).
