When I was in school I wanted to be a doctor, but my teachers told me I was not smart enough. I wanted to be a dancer, but my coach said I wasn't talented enough. I wanted to be in the Army, but my brother told me I wasn't strong enough. I wanted to be a lot of things when I was small. Now I want to be a teacher. So everyone tells me I am too smart for that, I should not waste all my talents, and I am too strong to have such little impact on life. My personal beliefs are simple:
1- You are only as smart as
you let yourself be. In teaching you must see every child as an opportunity.
Every
student holds the key to the
door of dreams. It is not your job to open the door for them, just help
them find it.
2- Talent is a funny thing;
you can only find it when you stop looking for it. As a teacher, you must
realize all
students are talented, just
in different ways. It is not your responsibility to find their talent,
just to make sure they
do not over look it.
3- Strength is not measured
with the body, rather with the mind and heart. When teaching you know your
strengths, but you should never
assume about another's. You do not need to “lift” things for the weaker
students,
just push them to find a way
to move it for themselves.
