The KU Women's Lacrosse Club lost its first home game in club history on Saturday at Broken Arrow Park, losing to Regis University of Denver, Colorado by a score of 20-4. KU was hampered by the absence of starting goalkeeper Adrian Gallagher due to illness, as well as the lingering effects of the flu on several starters. Senior Lara Ratican scored two goals, breaking the Jayhawk career scoring record. Jessica Kibbe and Kristen Bloom also tallied for the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks begin league play on April 10 in Champaign, Illinois against Purdue University and the University of Illinois. The next KU home game will be April 25th, when the Jayhawks will play against the University of Missouri and Truman State University, as part of the divisional championships for the Women's Collegiate Lacrosse League.

The University of Kansas Women’s Lacrosse Club tied one game and lost one game on Saturday at Purdue University. In the opening game, Kansas overcame a late two goal deficit to tie Purdue University 7-7. In the second game, the University of Illinois used its speed in the midfield to jump out to a 5-0 lead and held on to hand Kansas a 10-5 loss. The Jayhawks were led by Lara Ratican with five goals in the two games. Mary Burkhart and Kristen Bloom both tallied goals in their first appearances for Kansas. Kansas takes on the U.S. Air Force Academy and Texas Tech University in Syracuse, KS on October 24.

The KU Women’s Lacrosse Club played and won its first home game in its three-year history last Saturday at broken Arrow Park. Based on the team’s performance, finding future opponents willing to make the trip to Lawrence might prove even more difficult. KU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on visiting Truman State University on the way to a 20-6 win.

The early lead allowed the Jayhawks to play the entire squad extensively, which resulted in a dozen different players notching goals. Leading the way was Mandy Swanne, making her KU debut with four goals on four shots. Season high scorer Sophie Nassif added three, as did freshman Jessica Kibbe.

With the game at hand early, several defenders were able to move up into the offensive end. Defensive Wings Alexis McKinley and Erin Riley both scored their first career goals in the second half, as did Cover Point Torrie Hoy.

Three players playing in their first game ever made the most of their time on the field. Caroline Clauson managed to shake her defender from her Attack Wing position to score a goal. Karen Taylor helped anchor the KU midfield with several roll-dodging runs into the Truman end. Qurat Mir converted several Truman dropped passes into turnovers with her strong ground ball play.

Rounding out the scoring for KU were Karey Rinkenberger with two, and Alaina Henry, Janae Hanna, Lara Ratican, and Noeleen Luckert with one each. Freshman Point Laura Lavid set a new single-game assist record with two, while Senior Goalkeeper Tracy Stephenson made four saves.

KU next plays at home the weekend of April 25 and 26 when it hosts its first tournament out at the Westwick Rugby Complex. Truman State and KU will be joined by Missouri and Knox College in the season finale for all four schools.

While KU has the most experience playing together of all four schools, Missouri brings several players with extensive high school experience from the St. Louis area that should test the Jayhawks, particularly in the midfield.

The tournament will mark the final game for six seniors: Janae Hanna, Alaina Henry, Alexis McKinley, Sophie Nassif, Mandy Swanne, and Karen Taylor. "It’s unfortunate to be leaving just as the sport is taking off in the midwest and at KU." Commented career goal scoring leader Sophie Nassif. "I’m looking forward to the tournament though. It’s a great way to show people what lacrosse is all about."
