To Monet, Light was a fanatical issue. Monet distinguished
hundreds of different ones. He carried his realism so far as
to refuse to continue painting as soon as a given light effect
changed--after a few minutes in some cases, hardly time enough
to make substantial progress. It meant that he needed to return
many times over to the same site and wait for the return of a
particular effect in order to bring some pictures to completion.
When it was possible to have dozens of canvases at hand, Monet
could and did try to record each slight variation in effect. |
