Compaq Presario 4504

I bought my presario 4504 from CompUSA in Summer 1997. It is a poor designed home PC. The major problem is that it only allow maximal 48M memory to be installed. But It is still working now.

What I have done to upgrade my computer:

Added 512k level-2 cache.
Added additional 32MB memory, plus 16M that came with the machine, it now has total 48M.
Added 1M video memory.
Added two new hard drives, one is a new 6.4G Western Digital, the other is a 8.4G Seagate.
Replaced the Compaq's own 33.6-kbps modem with a Jaton modulator v.90 modem.
Replaced the old Goldstar 16x cdrom with a newer 40x I/O Magic cdrom. The old one did not recognize CD-RW media.
Attached a 16x4x4 micro-solution backpack CDRW to the printer port. There is no room inside this PC for a internal CDRW.

How to configure a PPP link in UNIX:

Make sure you do not have a WINMODEM, The Compaq's own 33.6-kbps modem in my PC is a Winmodem. As I know, USR 56k internal modem (model no. 5685) is a good REAL one, but you can also choose Jaton modulator v.90 internal modem in order to save some bucks.
Use jumpers to configure your modem to use COM1.

TroubleShooting:

I have a TRio 64V2/DX display card with 2M video memory, and the kdmconfig program in my solaris 7 offers only 8 & 24 bits color modes. How can I use 16 bits color mode?

How to add a new disk my solaris x86?

Assume you have 2 hard disks at this time. the primary one in /dev/rdsk should be: c0d0p0, the secondary one is c1d0p0. At boot time you should use "b -r" to let the computer know your new disk. then use

# fdisk /dev/rdsk/c1d0p0
  create the required solaris large partition.
# format
format> partition
  sub partition: 0:  /
                 2:  whole one
                 3:  swap
format> label
format> quit

# newfs /dev/dsk/c1d0s0

How to clone solaris partitions

option of newfs, which defaults to 10.
For this example, I'm going to clone a boot disk on c0t0d0s0 with a /usr partition on c0t3d0s6 onto the disk on c0t1d0s*.

# newfs /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0 -m 5
# newfs /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s6

Now, mount the destination partition

# mount /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0 /mnt

Get creative with ufsdump/restore

# ufsdump 0f - /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s0 | (cd /mnt;ufsrestore rf -)

Make the new root disk bootable

# installboot /usr/platform/`uname -m`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0
(If X86: use c1d0s2 instead !!!)

Repeat for different partitions

# mount/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s6 /mnt/usr
# ufsdump 0f /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s6 | (cd /mnt/usr;ufsrestore rf -)

Use same swap files in Win95 and NT:

pagingfile=?:\pagefile.sys
Substitute your NT drive in place of "?".)

How to use RPM

$ rpm -ivh rpm_name-version_number.i386.rpm

$ rpm -e rpm_name

$ rpm -Uvh rpm_name-version_number.i386.rpm

$ rpm -q rpm_name
