Thinking of Staging a
Run in the Area?

From time to time  individuals and organizations call and ask about staging a race and can they make money  if they do so.

The answer to the question is complex. Here are some things to consider in hosting an event in our area.

Where will I have the event?

Consider the locale first. In Beaumont you will need a parade permit, unless you have the event in Terrell Park, and remember if you choose city streets you will need volunteers at major intersections and a police escort to lead the race. Most other cities in the area do not require a permit but do get the aid of local police departments.

When will I have the event?
The time of year is important around here because of our hot weather. Spring and fall are ideal times to host a race. Just remember to have plenty of water or fluids available for runners.

How many volunteers will I need?

Depending on the size of the race you will need volunteers for handing our pre race packets and registration. Additional people will be needed at mile markers and water stations on the course. At the finish line you would need people for timing, handing out finish place tags, and keeping runners in line as the finish. The results table should have at least two people to record and list age group finishers.

How much money will I need for shirts and  awards?

The average running race in the Golden Triangle usually draws between 35 to 60 runners. Most runners and walkers want a shirt or memento from the event.

Typical age group awards for men and women, given three deep in each group, are: 0-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+. This is in addition to the overall male and female finisher. In larger races awards are also given for overall male and female master.

Expect to pay around $6.50 for multicolored shirts and  $5.00 for each medal or trophy. Volunteers need to be considered when ordering shirts.

How do I measure the course?
Once the area is chosen for the race have the course measured with a surveyors wheel for accuracy. Consider the shortest distance between points as the course is laid out. Two measurements should be done for accuracy

Draw a map and list landmarks so you can find the mile marks, the start,  and the finish.
