In my opinion there is nothing "much" wrong with Windows, ok, so it has its bugs, but doesn't everything.  I may be in a chat room and here all these kiddies going, MaN WiNdOzE SuX0Rs d00D, iT So FuX0rIn CrAp, and yet I bet 90% of these kids are there, using the product.  (they only say this to look big, wanna look big say i use win95 and am proud ;))  Win95 was alright, Win98, just a service pack for Win95.  WinNT is a nice product, it has a much better kernal and things run abit more smoothly.  With winNT, you have more control over what you are doing, this is because win95/98 were designed for "mr and mrs joe user" - but they have alot of hidden goodies in there ;)

On this page I hope to talk to you abit windows.  Windows is very easy to configure, just pointing and clicking really - most of the stuff is, guess what, in the manual!!!   Here is some of the stuff that is not menchioned or hard to find.

I take it you use the control panel alot, yeah me too, I get annoyed at having to always go through many sets of folders just to get to the applets.  Lets make a handy shortcut to them.

  1. Right click on the start button and select explore.
  2. Right click in the explorers right pane (you should see the folder Programs there)
  3. Select New/Folder
  4. Type in this for the name Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} for the folder name
  5. Close your explorer down and check your start menu for the new applets.

Pretty good huh ?  Did you ever wonder what the startup menu was on in your programs folder ?  Put any programs that you want to load when you start windows and whala, they load.  Did you know from the screen It is now safe to turn off your computer, you can just type win and it starts back up again!   When windows is loading and you see there welcome screens, you can push esc to see what they are hiding!!  Want to change them screens ? Goto Start, Find, Files and folders, and search for files called lo.sys, logo.sys and logow.sys.  These are the 3 screens that you see.  To find them you may need to goto explorer, view, options, select show all file types and uncheck, hide extentions for know file types.  You then open up them free files in ms paint and edit them to your pleasure. Wanna change the menu buttons like file and insert ?  You can do this if ou are lucky.  Well some programs write this into the registry.  All you gotta do is find it and change!!   For example, goto Start, Run, and then type regedt32.  Bring the window, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to the top and click software, then go rooting through all your software entries looking for them.  They could be there, they may not, go a hunting!!   You can also do ctrl + alt + del to get past a locked screen saver !!

Heres a few keyboard shortcuts:-
Ctrl + esc = bring up the start menu
alt + space bar + n = minimize active window
alt + f4 = close active window
ctrl + z = undo
ctrl + x = cut
ctrl + c = copy
ctrl + v = paste
You know every time you are using a program and you see the little line under a letter of each one that excutes a command.  Well that means that you can press alt + that letter to excute it.
alt + tab = choose you active window
crlt + alt + del = bring up task manager
tab = move between text boxes and command buttons left to right
shift + tab = same as tab but moves the other way
shift + right clicking on an icon gives you the abilitly to select what program you want to open it with

Taking advantage on those with File & Print sharing enabled on their machines (the poor souls)  I hope you read up in secruity on how to disable that.  Ok, so you suspect your friend has File & Print Sharing enabled.  But how the hell do you take advantage of that.  Well it is easy, so I easy I am embarrased to tell you.

Click on start, click on run, and type \\[ip_addy] - or if you were really cool, you wouldn't need a mouse and you would be using the keyboard, Ctrl + esc, up, up, return, WHOA.

You now get the contents of that persons harddrive at your mercy or some stupid error message.  Either that person doesn't have File & Print sharing enabled or you are missing some network services.  Go to the properties of networking, (either through the control panel applet or right clicking on network neighboorhood).  Click the services tab and go to add.  Select Microsoft Networking.  Install that and let it do its thing a reboot.  Type inthe ip addy again and whala.

Things for you to find out.   You can download, but can you upload/modify/delete ?  If you can't how do you go about doing that (windows95/98 secruity is very weak and any new user can be added like that).  What about changing the users interface (that is funny)  Change the desktop, the size of scroll bars - make them big. very big.  These can all be found in the registry and change the settings as appropriate (play about in your registry to see what you can do).  Hint, when you load up your registry editor, remember to import the hive off the users machine or you will be fucking your own. (to load the regestry editor, goto start, run, and type regedt32.  Then go Registry and load hive.  All hives will be found in the system directory.)   Does this apply when you find a NT machine ?  What about using NetBIOS ?

A tool that can scan for open machines can be found here. It is called WinHack Gold

Have Fun !!
