Greetings from Massachusetts,
This weekend is Free Preview weekend for my cable company. As a result, the movies on the movie channels are actually good, for a change. I highly recommend Drop Dead Gorgeous, a subversive comedy about a small-town beauty pageant. Bowfinger was pretty funny also.
On the Boston Theater scene, Kathleen Turner is currently in Tallulah, at the Colonial. Seussical, the musical based on the works of Dr. Seuss finished its run at the Colonial and now has headed off to Broadway. Described as being "Seinfeld set to music" is I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, now at the Stuart Street Playhouse. Blue Man Group (at the Charles Playhouse) cannot be described, but you can check them out at blueman.com. Copacabana, at the Shubert, is a musical based on the song by Barry Mannilow. Shear Madness continues its long run.
Upcoming Theater: Brian Dennehy will be in a play and, surprise!, he doesn't play the drunk, Irish cop role that he's been typecasted as. No, Brian Dennehy will be at the Shubert, playing Willy Loman in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Also upcoming at the Wang is Phantom of the Opera which begins in January. Other upcoming shows include Godspell, at the Shubert; Beauty and the Beast, at the Wang; Penn & Teller, at the Shubert (in February-- I hope to go see this); and Rent, at the Wang.
In scary news, Marilu Henner and Tom Wopat (from Dukes of Hazzard) will be starring in Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun, at the Wang. In scarier news, Tom Selleck will appear in A Thousand Clowns, at the Shubert.
In the low arts: Mystery Cafe presents four offerings: Murder on the Campaign Trail, Boston Harbor Mystery Cruise, Good Will Haunting in Salem, and Back Bay Mansion Mystery ("Search the mansion, solve the crime"). The latest dinner theater offerings include The Soprano's Last Supper (from the creator's of Joey & Maria's Comedy Wedding, also playing). The other dinner theater is Maria's Bachelorette Party, but I could have sworn that there was yet another dinner theater titled something like "Joey & Maria's Comedy Divorce". I'll check into this.
In news that actually has something to do with job hunting. In today's Boston Sunday Globe, an article about the employee-shortage in Massachusetts-- 2.6 unemployment rate. The CTO of Gold Wire Technology in Waltham is going to give away a blue Porsche Boxster as a recruiting gimmick. New recruits and employees who refer new hires will be entered in a raffle for the car, in a recruiting campaign to hire 110 people by December 2001. The Globe also reports that "demand [for high-tech workers] has been so strong in the Dallas-Fort Worth area that people are begging for workers, particularly in high-tech and retail."
