Research and Teaching Experience

  • Research Fellow: Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, University of Michigan Medical Center, 1998 to the present. Study: The effect of hormone replacement therapy on postmenopausal women with polio.
  • Research Fellow: Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, 1996-1998. Responsibilities include: Design and implementation of empirical research, data analysis, development of research manuscripts and presentations, and participation in weekly research seminars.
  • Consultant: Department of Psychology, The University of Toledo, 1992-93. Providing statistical consulting and computer software development for purposes of test scoring and data analysis. Provided instruction to undergraduate research assistants on research methods and in the use of statistical computer packages for data analysis.
  • Graduate Assistant: Department of Psychology, The University of Toledo, 1987-1993. Taught introductory Psychology classes and assisted in course grading and testing for Dr. Christopher Layne. Collected and analyzed data in research conducted by Drs. Wesley Bullock and Susan Labott. Performed statistical analyses and created computer test-scoring and data analysis software.
  • Research Assistant: Department of Psychology, Oakland University, 1985-1986. Assisted Dr. Frank Schieber in developing parameters for an experimental simulation of visual aging.

Clinical Experience:

  • Post-doctoral Fellow: Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, University of Michigan Medical Center, 1996-1998. Provided individual therapy, consultation, and psychological assessment to adult inpatients with physical and/or neurological impairments, including amputation, burns, hip replacement, spinal cord injury, stroke, and traumatic brain injury.
  • Staff Psychologist: St. Clair County Community Mental Health, 1995-1996. Developed and implemented individualized clinical treatment plans for chronically mentally-ill and developmentally-disabled clients in a sheltered work setting. Responsibilities included: provided individual, group, and family therapy, crisis intervention, conducted psychological assessments, and provided treatment team consultation.
  • Therapist: Medical College of Ohio, Rehabilitation Hospital, 1993-1994. Provided individual and group psychotherapy to adult inpatients with physical or neurological impairments, including Alzheimer's Disease, expressive and receptive aphasia, stroke, hip replacement and paralysis.
  • Psychology Intern: Northwest Ohio Consortium for Professional Psychology, 1992-1993. Provided individual and group therapy, psychological assessment, and campus outreach services to students in a university counseling center and to adolescents in an inpatient psychiatric unit.
  • Psychology Trainee: Student Medical Center, The University of Toledo, 1992-1993. Provided psychotherapy, assessment, and consultation services to patients and staff in a university medical center.
  • Psychology Trainee: Department of Psychology, The University of Toledo, 1987-1991. Conducted psychological testing, assessment, and psychotherapy with students in a university psychology clinic.
