On 26th August 1999, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohammad, announced at a rally for ITM Alumni at Shah Alam that ITM has been upgraded to a university. The institute will be known as Universiti Teknologi MARA. Obviously, the initials UTM will confusion with the other UTM at Skudai, Johor. After much debate between ITM and the Education Ministry officials, they decided Universiti Teknologi MARA will be known as UiTM (note the letter i is lower-cased). This is because the initials ITM is widely known among the public. UiTM also has a new logo.
