On November 11, 1997, Joseph Abraham Levi, The University of Iowa, was an invited guest speaker at The University of Iowa English as a Second Language Program end of the semester faculty meeting, where he talked about: "A More Creative Use of the Language Laboratory in Second Language Acquisition. What Works in Portuguese Can Work for ESL too! How to Use the Sony Systems to your Advantage. A Closer Look at the Sony LLC-5510 Console and/or Sony LL Control Console LLC-9000 System." The presentation roused an interest in seeing these activities in action, in a laboratory setting. Consequently, on January 12, 1998, Joseph Abraham Levi was invited to organize a one-day workshop for the staff of the English as a Second Language Program in the Language Media Center, titled: "Hands on Sony LL Control Console LLC-9000 System. The Eight Activities that will Improve your Students' Performance in the Multimedia Language Laboratory. A Demonstration." Among the eight features presented, the Video Projector and Console Mode and the Questions and Answers Drills within the Analyzer Mode were those that triggered the most enthusiastic response. The former activity involved a tv/vcr set hooked up to the Console so that students could all listen to the programming through their headphones; the latter exercise, instead, allowed instructors to perform questions and answers drills and then obtain compuer printouts analyzing students' performance and progress in the classroom, individually as well as collectively.
