I did misremember part of the story, since it wasn't the actual DNA they messed with. (Researchers in reality performed tissue engineering.) However, it is only a comic strip, not a thesis.
I did read an article on actual genetic changes causing glow-in-the-dark mice, which you can see HERE.
If you're wondering why the Professor has stray lines over his face in panel 3, it's because I fell asleep while inking the strip and randomly made some pen-strokes.
