About Joseph

Trombonist Joseph W. Frye holds a Master of Music degree in Trombone Performance from The Florida State University, a Bachelor of Music in Education from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and is currently a doctoral candidate for the Doctor of Music degree with an emphasis in Trombone Performance from The Florida State University.

In August, Joseph will assume his new position as Principal Trombone with The Midland-Odessa Symphony & Chorale. He will also serve as the trombonist with The Lone Star Brass (quintet) and will teach privately in the Midland-Odessa area. In addition, he also plays trombone and euphonium with the 572ns Air National Guard Band of the Smoky Mountains, where he holds the rank of Staff Sergeant and is the current solo trombonist.

Joseph's primary trombone instructors are Dr. John Drew of The Florida State University and the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Professor Don Hough of The University of Tennessee at Knoxville and former Principal Trombone of The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. He has also studied with Lawrence Borden of The Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University and Principal Trombone of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, and Brad Kinney.

Joseph's ensemble experience includes engagements with the The Florida State University Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, FSU Winds, University of Tennessee Wind Ensemble,and UT Symphony Orchestra. His professional Orchestra engagements have included The Oak Ridge, Knoxville, Albany, and Tallahassee Symphonies. Joseph was a founding member of The Florida State University Brass Trio, and toured with the group in 2003 to Costa Rica as part of the Promising Young Artists of the 21st Century Program. Frye is also the founder of the new Florida State University Trombone Choir, and served as the conductor from 2001-2005.
