The College of Information Technology was originally conceptualized as the University's response to the manpower needs of labor market that was rapidly overtaken by advances in the field of Information and Technology.

The college started with only one course, Bachelor of Science in Information and Computer Science (BSCIS), in 1988. It was the first of its kind course throughout Region 02. It opened with only 49 enrollees. A revision of the curriculum was made in 1994 and BSCIS became Bachelor of Science in Computer and Information System (BSICS). Three Technology courses were also offered: Bachelor of Science in Computer engineering (BSCoE), Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering (BSECE), and Certificate in Computer Programming (CCP).

In school year 1996-1997, the Computer Technology Department under the College of Engineering and Technology was developed into the College of Information Technology. In line with this modification, BSCIS, which has two majors (Information System and Computer Science merged as one), was converted into the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) with the two majors separated. BSIT, along with BSCoE and BSECE, is offered with a ladderized curriculum. The ladderization of the course resulted from the observation that some students cannot afford to finish their degree because of financial constraints or some other reasons. The certificate for course completion given to students every end of year gives them possible employment and job opportunities commensurate to the course they finished at the end of every school year.

The College simultaneously embarked on an intensive human and physical resources development. It has hardware and software facilities that meet the needs of the students. The curricular enrichments and upgrading of instructional materials promoted the popularity of the College and its enrolment swelled of up to 1,080 students for the school year 1996-1997. And as of March 1996, it has already graduated some 388 students for both BSICS and BSCIS degrees, majority of whom are employed in different schools and big companies nationwide and abroad.
