  • Dr Phoon's note on his meeting with Global Chinese SDA Ministers

“I was away for about 8 days in Taiwan Adventist College for the Global Chinese Ministers' Conference from May 12 to 19. I met Pastor Ly Cap Thoi of the Oakland Chinese SDA Church and also the Vietnamese Church. He graduated in 1973 from SAUC and went back to Vietnam. Left Vietnam I believe in 1975 and was in Australia for a few years before coming overto the US. I have not met him for 25 years and it was an enjoyable experience and I told him that we should not wait another 25 years before we meet again. The next one would be at the feet of Jesus I hope.

The next alumni I met were Dr David and Mrs Maggie Phang. They are longing to return to serve in SAUM. David is working with the Publishing House in Taiwan and Maggie is teaching English in TAC.

Of course Dr David Wong, the Youth Director of the North Asia Pacific Division was there too. He gave an inspiring devotion on the possible outreach to the Chinese communities in the world.

I presented a paper on who are the Chinese and challenged the group to think of Chinese as more than a language or a geographical origin but people with the same blood-link and who need the saving grace of Christ as well.

At the end of the conference, an association known as The Chinese Adventist Association was formed with Pastor Stanley Ng, the president of the South China Island Union Mission as chairperson. It is not an administrative association but one which can assist outreach to all Chinese communities in the world, irregardless of whether they speak Chinese or not.

The move of SAUC to Thailand is still targetted for June 98. We are praying that the curriculum will be ready by this September and that we can get all the human resources we need to get things going. A number of the SAUC staff are helping to write the curriculum on top of teaching, and it does get too much at times. Only the Lord is holding us up.

The last alumni homecoming is this August; however, Winna is planning for a group to visit SAUC in March of next year. She will be disseminating the details soon, so watch for it. If you're interested in joining us this year, the dates for the 98 Homecoming are August 7, 8 and 9.

    Sincerely,

    Phoon Chek Yat”
