Local History:Initially founded as Sigma Alpha around the time Troy State University's administration decided to allow Greek organizations to form. The Sigma Alpha group soon sought to become affiliated with an established national fraternity,and petitioned Sigma Pi Fraternity to become a colony. Sigma Pi Fraternity granted colony status, and the group was officially chartered Nov. 12, 1971 as the Delta-Psi Chapter of Sigma Pi. There are three Sigma Pi chapters in Alabama: one at Troy State, one at Auburn and one at the University of West Alabama in Livingston.
Sigma Pi's History:Sigma Pi was founded Feb. 26, 1897, at Vincennes University in Vincennes,Indiana, by four friends following a lecture about the birth of college fraternities.In 1897, college fraternities were just forming on the nation's oldest college campuses. The four founders adopted the name Tau Phi Delta. The name was changed to Sigma Pi Fraternity about 10 years later, and expansion continued.Today, Sigma Pi Fraternity is international with more than 190 chapters and colonies in the United States and Canada, and more than 70,000 initiated brothers and alumni. Expansion is still continuing nationwide.
Local Membership:The Troy State University chapter of Sigma Pi has more than 300 alumni, and about 25 current active members after losing 10 brothers to graduation in spring of 1997..
Dues & Fees:
Events & Activities:Sigma Pi is increasingly active on campus. The fraternity holds rush parties,pledge swaps with sororities, band parties, homecoming parties, an annualFounder's Day banquet, fund raising events, community service activities,tailgating parties, beach trip, road trips, and the brothers and pledges participate in intramural sports, Student Government Association, honor societies, student groups, ROTC, and many other activities on and off campus.
Chapter House:The Delta-Psi Alumni Club of Sigma Pi is negotiating with Troy State University to purchase the Chapter House. A complete renovation is about to begin. At the beginning of fall quarter 1998, the Sigma Pi Chapter House will be the nicest on campus (in our modest opinion). The house is designed to hold up to 20 people, but one room is used as an office and there are two rooms designated as single-occupancy rooms. When the Alumni Club finalizes its deal to buy the house, a brother or pledge can live in the house for less than the university charges to live in a dorm. The Alumni Club is planning to buy a new big-screen TV, new social room furniture and will be making several other improvements beyond the renovation.
House Fees:The university currently charges $560 per quarter to live in its regular dorms or fraternity houses. This fee is subject to change. Once the purchase of the house is complete, the Alumni Club will assess the fee for living in the fraternity house.
Creed:I believe in Sigma Pi, a fellowship of kindred minds, united in brotherhood to advance truth and justice, to promote scholarship, to encourage chivalry, to diffuse culture, and to develop character, in the service of God and man; and I will strive to make real the Fraternity's ideals in my own daily life.
