I don't think I have anything pertinent to add to the ongoing discussion because I lost the passion for real journalism pretty early on in school. It definitely wasn't there during or after my internship at Newsworld in Calgary. Now I'm a government flak and am pretty happy about it for the time being.

Occasionally, I'll think to myself, "That would make a great story" but the urge never stays for long! However, I'm pretty sure the propaganda-writing life that I lead is not for Kristen or Jill.

Kristen, I suggest you take that trip to Africa that you were supposed to take after school ended. Jilly Mac, I suggest you travel the world too. Then if the mood to write strikes either of you, write a book or do some freelancing.

I think we were all born writers - just maybe not journalists. Or maybe just not traditional journalists - the possibilities out there are endless. I say decide exactly what you want, then go for it.

I personally am planning to make a small fortune writing trashy Harlequin romance novels whenever I work up the energy. Feel free to send me your suggestions for a trashy romance novelist pen name...i.e. Aurora Knight or Solange LaBelle.

Well, I no longer have the most common last name in the world. Or at least I buried it a bit. I am now Kim Hambleton instead of Kim Smith. Actually, I couldn't bring myself to ditch the name completely, so technically I am Kimberley Marie Smith Hambleton, but I'm sure I'll never use the whole thing. Before anyone accuses me of being old-fashioned, I did think about keeping my own name, but let's face it, Smith is the most boring name in the whole world. I'm kind of boring myself, but I thought I'd spice things up. Of course, I have committed myself to a lifetime of saying, "No, not Hamilton, it's Hambleton" and spelling it out.

Our wedding went pretty smoothly and Dave and I had a great time, and I hope our guests did as well. A few small things went awry (like my dad almost being knocked unconscious seconds before walking me down the aisle) but it just added some colour to the event.

I look forward to Karen's report on her day and her "big news" too. Best of luck to Chad and Shelley and Heather and Tristan - it's a lot of work but worth it for the fun!

PS Congratulations to all the people who have recently moved on to bigger and better jobs (and locations)! Jilly Mac, even though we never got to see each other while you were here, I miss you already!

I was going through a junk drawer on the weekend and I found my receipt from Jostens for the grad pictures we got last year. It made me realize that I never received the compilation photo of all our grad pictures that I had paid extra for. Did anyone else order one of those? And if so, did you ever get it?

And then this came to me shortly after. (Chad)

I answered my own question from this morning, but you might want to post what I found out in case anyone else was wondering about it.

Jostens gave me a big sob story about all the changes they've been going through over the last year. But when they did the pictures for this year's graduating class, someone reminded them that the composite from 2000 wasn't done yet. So they're processing the composite from our year at the same time as this year's, and they should be mailed out in the next 3 to 4 weeks.

So far I am really enjoying my new job at SGI. There's lots to do and the work atmosphere in the Communications department is nice and relaxed, even though we're constantly on deadline. I haven't been in the middle of the stress quite yet, but I know my time is coming.

Further to Chad's recommendation of "Memento", my brother saw it in London when it came out there last year and he said it was awesome, and made me promise I would go see it as soon as it gets here.

I also have recommendations, but mine are for TV shows. "Oz" which is an HBO prison drama, but airs in Canada on Showcase on Fridays, is a depressing, brutal, sometimes disgusting and dark show, but it is so good I would recommend it. Even more so for "Queer as Folk," which is also on Showcase on Monday nights. It's sort of a "Sex in the City" for gay men, except more sexually graphic and way funnier.

Ignore both those recommendations if you are either very conservative or homophobic.

I'm blanking - was there a girl named Kim who was a fourth year when we were third years?

Does anyone still have the web site address that gave you a Wu-Tang Clan nickname? I think it was Renee who originally sent it out.

Hi kids,

Well, I finally have some news to share. I am starting a new job at SGI Communications on March 1. It's a permanent position with good pay and benefits. Actually, it's the one that was posted on this website back in December. My soon-to-be boss, Barbara Cross, is also a J-school graduate from '93. She seems really nice and I have already heard great stuff about her from several different people. This job will certainly be more challenging than my position here at SCN, but I am somewhat sad to leave as SCN is a great work environment with great people. I'm not sure what they're going to do with my position here yet but if they decided to re-staff it I will post the notice to the website.

I hope everyone is doing well!

It's been really slow around the web site lately. I have nothing important to say, I just can't stand the silence anymore.

In a small world type thing, I was just washing my hands the other day (SCN is in the CBC building but the washrooms are by the CBC TV side) and coming back I saw Jilly Mac, who just started working at CBC a couple of weeks ago, in one of the viewing rooms and she was watching a piece by Michele. J-schoolers are everywhere!

The only other news I have is that I sent out my first press release last week. I guess I am now officially a government hack, putting my little spin on the message. It's less shameful than I thought it would be.

Anyway, where is everyone these days? I encourage you guys to send an update about your lives for the enjoyment of those of us who don't have one.

It was good news all around for me last week. My contract with SCN has been extended until the end of April, with a bit of an increase in pay. Then, I received an official proposal and a beautiful engagment ring from Dave on the weekend. I know that those of you who check the web site regularly know that Dave and I decided to get married a few months ago and had already set a date, but Dave still wanted to do a traditional proposal with the ring and everything. It was terrific - he took guitar lessons over the summer and played me "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong and then officially "popped the question". We had a three-day long date. It was a great weekend.

If there was a sour note to the whole thing, Dave didn't get called to do the Canadian millionaire show even though he had qualified through the phone call. He wasn't too disappointed because he was happy to have qualified at all. I didn't even try. Did any of you guys?

This little update should keep me off Chad's list for a while. Congratulations to everyone who's been sharing their good news lately about jobs and such.

I have some news about an old classmate...Dave Simon called SCN yesterday to ask if he needed a broadcaster onside before he could apply for a development grant. I guess that means he's an independent producer now (no money). I don't remember him being talented with the camera, so I think it's kind of weird. Anyway, I wasn't in the mood for small talk, so I didn't chat him up. Since he called from a Regina number, I guess that means he hasn't escaped the Queen City for Africa quite yet. Congratulations to Ken and Michele and everyone else who I'm forgetting! And thank you to everyone who sent e-mails and even snail mail (beautiful cards) to say congratulations on the engagement. The J-school Class of 2000 is so sweet!

Our engagement was pretty casual, actually, but it's a remarkably long story, so if you don't have a lot of free time stop reading now. Dave wanted me to look at rings and he kept asking questions about how long people are usually engaged for and that sort of thing (yes I know, he's a master of subtlety). And then one day he asked me what I thought about getting married in May, not in a proposing sort of way, just in a theoretical way. So I looked at the dates in May 2001 and I saw the last Saturday in May was the 26th. I thought to myself that it was too bad that it wasn't the 25th, because if Dave and I ever have to use a number as "our" lucky number, we use 25. (I was born on November 25 and Dave's Cougar number was 25). Anyway, I looked across the calendar and saw that the only Saturday that was a 25th that year was in August. So I told Dave and we agreed that we should get married that day. So I told my parents. But Dave was miffed that I had told my parents before he had given me a ring. So I told him not to get me a ring (because it's not like I would be surprised anymore) and I would just wear a wedding band and we could put that money towards a honeymoon instead. But no, no, no, Dave wanted to propose the old-fashioned way, and later I found out he had the ring the whole time!!! So I waited and waited and waited and there was still no proposal even though he had the ring. So I hinted to Dave that I needed time to plan this event and in my subtle little way asked him how much I would have. He said he had "big plans" that would be happening "this summer". So given that this was still early May at the time, I told Dave I didn't want to wait all summer to tell my friends. Dave's mom was coming in for convocation, so Dave said we could tell her when she was here and then we could tell everyone else. So when I do get my ring it will be more of a "seal the deal" thing than a traditional proposal. So that's why I didn't post the details in the first place...it's obviously a long story.

I know I told a few people at convocation, but for the rest of you here's my news. After 5 1/2 years of dating, Dave and I have decided to tie the proverbial knot. Not tomorrow or anything, though. We've set the date for August 25, 2001. That gives us lots of time to save up some cash, and you guys lots of time to save up for some nice gifts! What am I saying - we're journalists, we don't have any money. Anyway, this is going to be pricey for us because Dave also was accepted into Education for this Fall, so he'll still be a starving student when we get hitched (I think he just wants me to be his Sugarmama; boy is he screwed). It looks like I might have to stick with PR for a while just to support us - I'm going to put the wedding on my resume as "special event planning". Michele and Jeff - I'll make sure there's enough Corona there to keep you happy! Hope everyone is having a great post-J-school summer.

Kim sent me a little bit of information today, but she was pretty tight with the details. Apparently, she is with the "dark side" now (that's what she called it), working as the Public Affairs Assistant for SCN. She will be working there until August 31, 2000.
