history: (from wikipedia encyclopedia)
NED University
of Engineering and Technology is the largest and oldest engineering
institution of Pakistan located in Karachi. The university was
originally founded as the Prince of Wales
Engineering College with donations from Karachi citizens to commemorate
the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1921. The College was renamed as
NED Engineering College in 1924 in honor of the philanthropist Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw.
After Pakistani independence in 1947, the provincial government of
Sindh took over the management of the College and renamed it to NED
Government Engineering College, Karachi. The College was affiliated to
the following Universities before it was granted full University status:
(from inception to University of Bombay1947), University of Sindh (1947
to 1951), and University of Karachi (1951 to February 1977). Plans to
move the college from the downtown area to a new 400,000 square-meter
site adjoining the University of Karachi
were carried out with World Bank assistance in 1975. The college was
upgraded to an additional campus of the University of Karachi in 1976,
and finally raised to university level on March 1, 1977. The University
offers bachelor degrees in several engineering disciplines.
