Archaeology is a fascinating subject, but unfortunately not always easily accessible. This site is deliberately aimed at those who have an interest in prehistory, but have previously been put off by jargon, technical terms, and boring text books.
Archaeology - Myth and Truth
THE MYTH:
labourers do all the work
archaeologists find gold all the time
archaeologists are rich
digs are financed by selling finds
THE TRUTH:
the archaeologists themselves dig ... often under very bad weather conditions
the most common finds tend to be fragments of pottery and flints
archaeologists are poorly paid - and they are not allowed to keep/sell finds
digs are financed by developers (rescue archaeology) or academic bodies. Very rarely government funding is made available.
