The Rochester Raging Rhinos shocked Major League Soccer's Tampa Bay Mutiny with a 4-3 dramatic win in double sudden-death overtime during the quarter-finals of the 1996 U.S. Open Cup on Saturday night in Rochester. The crowd of 12,428 at Frontier Field witnessed an epic battle as the Rhinos advanced to the semi-finals of the U.S. Open Cup by defeating MLS's top ranked team. Rochester native Chris Kennell, a late game substitute, scored the game-winner in the second 15 minute sudden-death overtime period to clinch the monumental win for the first-year franchise.

The Rhinos took a 2-0 lead into half-time on goals by midfielder Henry Gutierrez (33:28) and the A-League's top goal scorer, forward Doug Miller (41:22). Rochester was outshot by Tampa Bay 25-17, but Rhino keeper Bill Andracki made 20 saves to earn Player of the Game honors. Andracki made one of his biggest saves in the first half when he smothered Tampa Bay star midfielder Carlos Valderrama on a break-away.

Tampa Bay would not be eliminated easily and scored three goals late in the second half, all of which came within 6:14 of one another. The Mutiny's top two regular season scorers, midfielder Valderrama (penalty kick 84:49) and forward Roy Lassiter (79:36), helped bring Tampa Bay back with a goal each and a Lassiter assist. Mutiny forward Evans Wise (85:50) scored the tying goal, assisted by Lassiter, to send the match into overtime. Rochester's third goal was scored by Miller (81:27), his second of the match and seventh in his last five contests.

The Rhinos have shined at their new home, posting a 10-1 record at Frontier Field in front of nearly 12,000 fans each night.

The Colorado Foxes and Seattle Sounders have yet to play their U.S. Open Cup quarter-final matches against MLS opponents. The Foxes will play at the Kansas City Wiz on September 15 and the Sounders will play at the Dallas Burn on September 16.

Tampa - Harut Karapetyan dribbled his way through the Tampa Bay defense for a 59th minute goal to give the undefeated Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-1 win over the Mutiny in front of 19,717 spectators at Tampa Stadium Saturday night. The Galaxy are Major League Soccer's only undefeated team, at 8-0.

Karapetyan's goal came off a pass from Mauricio Cienfuegos. He took the ball from the left flank, passed two Tampa defenders and slipped the shot just inside the left post.

L.A. took the early lead in the 30th minute when Tampa defender Frank Yallop let a Cobi Jones pass go through toward the goal. When 'keeper Scott Budnick failed to advance on the ball, Galaxy forward Guillermo Jara stepped in to finish the goal.

Tampa's lone score came in the 35th minute. Roy Lassiter intercepted a Galaxy clearing pass and sent a left-footed shot past goalie Jorge Campos.

Tampa's record drops to 6-3 with the loss, still good enough for first place in the MLS East.

Dallas - Roy Lassiter broke a scoreless tie in the 82nd minute, and the Tampa Bay defense held on to edge the Dallas Burn 1-0 in a Major League Soccer match played in front of 11,457 spectators at the Cotton Bowl Thursday night.

For the second straight game, Lassiter teamed with league assist leader Carlos Valderrama to lead the Mutiny to victory. The Colombian international star took a pass at the top of the penalty area and shuttled it off to Lassiter on his right, who one-touched it past Dallas goalie Mark Dodd. In Tampa's last game, a 3-2 victory over San Jose May 18, Lassiter scored twice and Valderrama assisted on all three goals.

The win was Tampa Bay's fourth straight, and solidified the team's position atop the MLS East with six wins and two losses. Dallas snapped their own three-game win streak, and suffered their first home loss of the season. The Burn drop to 6-3 on the season.

Tampa - Colombian international Carlos Valderrama set up three first-half goals, including Roy Lassiter's game-winner in the 43rd minute, to lead the Tampa Bay Mutiny to a 3-2 Major League Soccer win over the San Jose Clash in front of 12,047 at Tampa Stadium Saturday night.

The deciding goal, Lassiter's second of the game, started with a Valderrama pass from 40 yards out. Lassiter took the ball 20 yards from the goal and sent the ball into the net to the left of Clash goalie Tom Liner. Lassiter and Valderrama also teamed up for the Mutiny's first score of the night, a series of two short passes leading to a left-footed conversion from 12 yards in the 18th minute.

Tampa's Steve Ralston also scored, taking a showy flip pass from Valderrama on the right side of the net and crossing it into the left corner in the 22nd minute. The Clash mounted a strong second-half comeback behind forward Paul Bravo, who scored on a penalty kick following a Steve Pittman handball in the 65th minute, then converted an Eddie Lewis pass in the 71st. Bravo has scored at least one goal in each of the Clash's last five games.

The win was Tampa's third straight, and keeps them on top of the MLS Eastern Conference. San Jose drops to 3-5, and now has a two-game losing streak.

East Rutherford, NJ - The New York/New Jersey MetroStars came back from a three goal deficit to take a 4-3 Major League Soccer win in a shootout over the Tampa Bay Mutiny in front of 36,621 at Giants Stadium Saturday night.

The MetroStars Ruben Dario Hernandez and Tab Ramos scored during the shootout. The Mutiny's only goal in the tie breaker came from Roy Lassiter.

Following a scoreless first half, the Mutiny (2-2) scored three goals in eight minutes. Diego Vierra scored the first of his two, knocking in a header of a cross by Lassiter in the 51st minute.

Wild haired Colombian Carlos Valderrama scored on a penalty kick in the 55th minute after Vierra was pulled down by MetroStars goalkeeper Zach Thornton who was in for the injured Tony Meola.

Vierra closed out the Mutiny's scoring in the 58th minute, putting in a shot from the top of the penalty area.

Giovani Savarese scored twice in two minutes for the MetroStars, who cracked the win column for the first time.

In the 72nd minute, Evans Wise knocked in a MetroStars corner kick. One minute later, Savarese scored off an assist from Hernandez, and in the 75th minute the duo teamed again as Savarese scored on a bicycle kick.

Tampa - Two pinpoint free kicks propelled the Dallas Burn to their third Major League Soccer win of the season, a 2-1 decision over the Tampa Bay Mutiny in front of 14,084 at Tampa Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Jason Kreis and Washington Rodriguez both turned direct free kicks into goals for the Burn, in the 24th and 30th minutes, respectively. The Mutiny had two goals, both by Roy Lassiter, called back in the same period, one for offside and the other for having occurred after the halftime whistle had blown. Lassiter went on to record Tampa Bay's sole tally on a left-footed shot from ten yards out at the 81 minute mark.

Dallas improves its MLS record to 3-1, including one shootout win. The loss was the Mutiny's first of the season, and drops their record to 2-1.
