In all sports there are those who compete purely for their own enjoyment and entertainment, and those who compete with a view to being selected for team competitions and, who knows, maybe ultimately the Olympics. Showjumping caters extremely well for both types of the competitor. For the less ambitious there are no end of unaffliated and affliated classes and competitions which still allow horse and rider to progress through the grades. They can go as far as their ability, time, and/or finances allow them.
For those looking for greater rewards, showjumping also offers some very good training and and team-selection programme for pony riders, juniors, young riders, and seniors. There are also Pony Club abd riding club competitions and championships. To be considered for team-selection usually involves informing the appropriate selection committee of your interest and then entering a number of specified competitions where your performance will be noted by the selectors. If you are a likely candidate for a team place , you may be invited to attend various training courses-but remember that the ability to operate as part of a team is as important as being a good enough competitor to warrant selection.
