  • In this section I would cover tournaments happening in India and more so the tournaments happening in Northern part of India and in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

UP State selection trials took place at Kanpur. Following pairs have qualified for summer nationals at Sanawar:Kr Vijayanand Singh & Pradeep Singh (Varanasi), CL Arora & Manoj Garg (Dehradun), NP Srivastava & NN Rastogi (Lucknow). MM Nangia & G Rodericks (Lucknow) are reserve one.Maheshwari (Allahabad) won the duplicate event and would be represnting UP at summer nationals. Indresh Agarwal, Sushil Agarwal, Govind Agarwal, A K sinha & B N Rastogi were playing for Maheshwari team.

The UP team did well at summer nationals by reaching semi finals where they lost to Railways ,the eventual winners, despite leading till 3 sessions of the four.

WBF World Wide Simultaneous Pairs event (formerly known as EPSON) would take place on June 2 & June 3 , 2000. The scoring of this event would be done on internet.

WBF is organising Mind Sports Organization's Worldwide Simultaneous Pairs on August 22 and August 23, 2000. It would be on the lines of Fifth Friday Championship organised by Herman De Wael. The magnitude of the championship would be higher with about 10000 tables results being compiled together.

Finals of the Vanderbilt knockout duplicate championship at spring NABC turned out to be very exciting.A strong Nickell team which has won Bermuda Bowl this year was facing Richard Schwartz team- the winner of past two Vanderbilt. Playing for Nickell were Rodwell, Meckstroth, Hamman,Soloway, Nickell & Freeman and Schwartz team was represented by Schwartz, Casen,Zia,Rosenberg, Levin & Weinstein. Vanderbilt is the only major trophy which Nickell team hasn't won till now.

With 16 boards to play Schwartz led by 113-88 and with 8 to go their lead was 20 IMPs. However, Nickell came back with a Slam swing, two game swings & a part score swing to lead by 7 IMPs with a board to go.

This week's deal was the final board at the Vanderbilt.

In open room Levin and Weinstein played the contract in 4 H making 12 tricks. In open room Hamman opened 2 C which promised C suit. Soloway's 3 H promised H & S of which Hamman took preference to S. Now Soloway's 5 D asked for key cards outside D suit and when Hamman replied with one or four he chose to play in 6 S.

Rosenberg underled his D A & K. The contract doesn't score if Rosenberg continues to play D when he is in with S King as Zia's trump gets promoted.

But Rosenberg in a rare move played C instead of D and Hamman was able to claim the contract and the Vanderbilt trophy.

Had Rosenberg played a D Schwartz team would have won by 4 IMPs.
