  • Tournament News
  • In this section I would cover tournaments happening in India and more so the tournaments happening in Northern part of India and in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

WBF is organising Mind Sports Organization's Worldwide Simultaneous Pairs on August 22 and August 23, 2000. It would be on the lines of Fifth Friday Championship organised by Herman De Wael. The magnitude of the championship would be higher with about 10000 tables results being compiled together.

  • Deal of the Week
  • In this section I would cover one good deal which appeared in the Weekly Bridge Tournaments at Lucknow or in a recent tournament with explanations.

This week's deal is from The 2000 World Wide Bridge Contest which took place on June 2, 2000.

After one year's gap the World Wide Pair Contest took place on June 2 & June 3 , 2000. The event has been dynamically scored over internet which means that all the participating clubs would upload the scores to a server based in London using FTP. Local matchpoints would not determine the heat winners instead the frequencies of scores from all the clubs would be used to determine overall & heat winners.

This week's deal is a freak deal from the deal collection of June 2, 2000.

After two passes North opens Precision C. East jump overcalls weak 2 H which is negatively doubled by South. West redoubles, North jumps to 3 NT and West again attempts to play in 4 H. Now South comes in with 5 C where auction ends.

On H lead contract got made which is shy on D lead. WEst could have introduced D suit at three level which could have made lead very easy.

The crux of this deal is that even though EW have 15 HCPs only, 4 H scores NS have no game accept 3 NT.

Looking at the deal from Total trick perspective- there are 22 trumps but only 19 tricks are there. Try reasoning this out. Perhaps this deal comes under freak deals where total trick applicability is low. Though normally on freak deals tricks are more than trumps here tricks are less than trumps.
