Jeff Miller (Metal Maniac) and Greg Warweg, who are hoping to bring pro wrestling interest back to Hawaii, formed the HIWF. The HIWF plans to have at least four more shows throughout the year, and hope to bring more big name wrestlers in with the line up of indy stars and Hawaii stars. Some of the wrestlers with the HIWF are part of WLW (World League Wrestling) and Lars Anderson, Ric Flair's cousin is a big name in Hawaiian wrestling, owning the LWL. HIWF anticipate being a supplier for the WWF or WCW. (Thank you, DC2000, for the info!)

Marks Anonymous spent Saturday night at the HIWF event in Kailua. It was the first show we'd been to and we didn't really know what to expect. It turned out to be great! We had a blast! To all of the folks who passed it up... It's your loss!
The wrestlers were great, playing up to the crowd and working the mic. All of the wrestlers were notable but, the most memorable guys included Cedric of Hollywood, the Metal Maniac, who has worked mainland leagues as well as Hawaii, The Siberian Tiger, a Russian who spoke remarkably good English =o), and Ryder, a mix of SCSA and Goldberg. Admittedly, Rick Martel and Tony Atlas were the draw for this show but the local guys were the ones that sold us and will have us coming back for more at every given opportunity. The wrestlers were great, playing up to the crowd and working the mic. All of the wrestlers were notable but, the most memorable guys included Cedric of Hollywood, the Metal Maniac, who has worked mainland leagues as well as Hawaii, The Siberian Tiger, a Russian who spoke remarkably good English =o), and Ryder, a mix of SCSA and Goldberg. The show started with an Irishman wrestling against the "Italian" Mr. Italy. We had to laugh at them; the Irishman came out with his mug of beer that he spit up into the air Juvi style and his tights had a huge shamrock drawn across his rather large midsection. We agreed the shamrock looked more like the Girl Scout Trefoil. Mr. Italy had these Italian flag colored/striped tights complete with knee and elbow pads to match. He did this Italian accent that was great. J R Ryder, a cross between Goldberg and Stone Cold, met up with Red Death. Red was dressed in a red body suit and devil mask. He was a hoot. The crowd was yelling for Ryder to spear him throughout the entire match. Match four involved Shooter, complete with Warrior style fringed white boots, against the "Russian" I mentioned earlier. The Siberian Tiger wore black with a big red Russian symbol in the middle of his chest. Next match involved tag teams. The favorites were a local Samoan pair. They wrestled the Rat Pack. The Rat Pack is a mixture of DX and the Wolf Pak. The local favorites were HUGE compared to the guys in the Rat Pack. Late in the match when the Samoans had the upperhand and seemed to be ready for the pin the other members of the Rat Pack jumped out from hiding and flooded the ring. The Samoans made quick work of them all, even throwing one of the smaller guys over the top rope to the floor. Tony Atlas was one of the main eventers last night. When asked what he had been up to lately, he answered that he had been wrestling across America in the indy leagues and also overseas in Europe and Asia. He also does a lot of work with kids and different drug programs, trying to educate the little ones. He wrestled against a local guy named Cedric of Hollywood. His name says it all, folks. He had long dark curly hair, goatee, and a valet named Sandy. He wore this sequined, sparkly black shirt over a pair of leather shorts and motorcycle boots. Needless to say, he was the heel and the crowd reacted to him. He was great with the kids sitting in the front row, talking stink to them, "threatening" to smack them silly, etc. Tony should have won the match, but another wrestler on the outside of the ring distracted him. He ran off after him and was counted out. When he came back to find he'd lost the match he went after Cedric. Cedric held him while Sandy kicked him in the face with her boots. Tony ducked and Sandy hit Cedric instead. (Big pop for that from the crowd.) At one point of the match, Sandy jumped up onto the ring apron and stepped on Tony's throat, doing a little jig up there while she ground her boots into his throat. Don "The Rock" Muraco is the Commissioner for HIWF and a wrestler with WLW. Name sounds familiar? It should- he was with WWF! Don did an in-ring interview with Rick, asking him what he'd been up to. Rick had knee injuries that he had to have surgery on and then after not resigning with WCW, he took te road doing these type of shows. He seemed to be having a blast. In my own humble opinion, I bet these guys find it easier to do this than to work with the big leagues, like WWF or WCW. The schedules can't be as hectic or as demanding. Whatever the case, he seemed really at ease as if he was having a great time. The last match of the night, the second main event, involved the Metal Maniac, a local heel, and Rick. Metal had the best mic skills! He talked stink with the grandma in front of us in the front row and she played along with him. He had this valet who reminded us of IRS from the old WWF. He kept yelling MET-AL MET-AL MET-AL. We yelled back SUCKS! Yeah, even we started to mark for these guys! Rick came out to the ring, getting swamped by the fans on the way to the ring. He yelled back at Metal as they traded insults and then Rick jumped in the ring and the match began. These two put on a great show and Rick ended up winning with a Lion Tamer. Once again, I can't tell you how much fun we had watching these guys. It's almost as if there's this little underground group of wrestlers and we stumbled onto them! Most of you out there have groups like this near you or in your hometowns. I strongly suggest that you take the time to learn about them and catch the shows! |
