Z100 (WHTZ, 100.3 FM) is a very influential Contemporary Hit Radio station that has been broadcasting in my hometown of New York for approximately sixteen years and currently ranks 3rd overall in the Arbitron ratings. Since June of 1997, I have been keeping track of its weekly playlist by ear. I listen on a regular basis and then proceed to make an educated determination as to what category each current cong occupies.
In simplified terms, here is how it all basically works: Those songs in Heavy Rotation are played the most times and considered to be of great importance. Songs in High Rotation can be heard once every three hours and may someday enter Heavy Rotation. Recordings under the Middle and Low Rotation headings are relatively new and receive the least amount of airplay, during different parts of the day. Whether or not any songs gain spins on Z100's CD player is dependent upon how well listeners respond to them in terms of retail, research and requests.
