Big Pool events
Pontoon pileup
Pic Pic Pic Pic (4 team simultaneous event)
In this event team members jump onto a large pontoon in the
big pool and paddle to the other end to pick up more team members
(which pile on top) and so on for a number of laps. ««
Paddle Steamers
Pic Pic Pic Pic Pic Pic (2 heats + final)
Two male team members stand on IAK paddlesteamer boat wheels
and run backwards to spin the paddle wheels and hence move the
boat forwards. Teams must complete a minor obstacle course in the
big pool. ««
Pop the Cork
Pic Pic (2 heats + final)
Male team member jumps into pool and then climbs huge
champagne bottle. Female team member throws lasso from edge of
pool to male team member who puts lasso over neck of huge bottle.
Female team member pulls down huge bottle and climbs onto huge
bottle neck, despite water (champagne?) squirting out of top of
bottle into her face. Female then grabs rope joining bottle neck
to bottle cork and then places huge cork on the huge bottle. «««
Icebergs

Team members skip along line of iceberg-styled pontoons across
the big pool. Team to reach other end of pool first wins. ««1/2
Ski Slalom aka Great Ski Race
Pic (4 team simultaneous event)
Male team members using ski-like pontoons paddle through a
minor obstacle course in the big pool. Memorable event as
Frankston (Frank Gleeson et al.)(once again) wasted their
joker on this one. ««1/2
Spin Out
Pic (2 heats + final)
One male and one female team member stand in a sort of a
"floating cup" in the big pool. Female team member
spins the cup using a paddle while male team member pulls on a
rope which is attached to the other end of the pool. Teams must
reach other end of pool. Michael Jordan of Hawkesbury turned this
event into a fine art. ««1/2
Springball
Pic Pic Pic Pic (2 heats + final)
Walk the Plank
Maiden Rescue aka Maiden Flight
Pic (2 heats + final)
Male 'buccaneer' team member slides down a flying fox from the galleon over the big pool. He collects a
female ('maiden') team member and is hauled back up the flying fox by team members on the galleon. This happens
twice, the team to finish the task first wins. Childers captain John Harbourne
showed Nostradamus-like foresight in using his Joker in this event (they were in a heat against
'Franga'). ««1/2
Up the Creek
Pic (2 heats + final)
Two team members, dressed as native American indians (in their state colours) paddled a canoe lengthwise along the
big pool. The canoe was attached with a large elastic band to the galleon at one end. At the end of the pool,
an additional team member got in the boat and they all had to paddle back and forth again. Navigation
(particularly when travelling backwards or when the boats were taking on water) or lack thereof, made for hilarious
results and cries of "interference!" from many a TV spectator. Rhythmic tribal drum soundtrack.

Small Pool Events
Frogs
(4 team separate event)
Two male contestants (as it is too dangerous for women!?)
wearing skin-tight frog costumes (in state colours with large
heads and flippers) run down a ramp and across about five small
pontoons over the small pool, and up another ramp. The team with
the most crossings in the time available won the event. Though a
highly popular event (and the favourite of Port Broughton skipper
Kevin Beinke), we regard frogs as highly hazardous. In the
European It's a Knockout, Jeux Sans Frontières, frogs
almost caused a diplomatic incident when the French team was
asked to dress up as frogs! «««1/2
Pillow Fight
Pic Pic Pic Pic (2 heats + final)
Team members dressed in nighties in their state colours and
appropriate headgear walked out onto a small platform on a pole
across the small pool. Team members then proceeded to whack with
pillows opposing team members, who were standing on an opposite
platform. The team with the least number of members that had
fallen in the pool won. This event was memorable for the comical
face-off between back-hoe operator Andrew Sloan of South
Australia and Queensland's Cathy Weatherall. «1/2
Bet Your Loaf
Pic Pic (4 team separate event)
(Half-)dressed as chefs, team members scramble across a
horizontal greased pole over the small pool, carrying a tray of
two loaves of bread. Team members deposit their loaves in a
basket at the end of the pole. A blindfolded opposition team
member flings a heavy suspended punching bag at the competitors
while they try to cross the pole. The team with the most loaves
in the basket at the end of the available time wins. Vermont
(Victoria) did well at this event. ««
Sheep Dipping
(4 team separate event)
Using the ramps from frogs, competitors take a foam
sheep and submerge them so that they pass under a metal pole.
This is not easy as the sheep are highly buoyant. Competitors
then take the sheep and scramble up the second ramp. The team
with the most legally dipped sheep up the ramp in the time limit
wins. This event made for some hilarious moments, such as when
Michael Cornish of Orange, New South Wales fell over on the
ascending ramp (sorry Mike!). We are somewhat skeptical of the
benefit conferred by the shearing experience of Danny Brokenshire
(the shearer from SA) in this event. «««
Bridge the Gap
(4 team separate event)
Team members jump across a gap in a bridge over the small
pool. The size of the gap is ever-increasing, as an opposition
team member (e.g. Sam Daniels of Box Hill, Victoria) operates a
winch to separate the sides of the bridge. The team with the most
crossings in the time available wins. A classic IAK event. Good
long-jump practice, but not for the faint-hearted. «««
Tightrope Suction
Pic Pic Pic
(4 team separate event)
Team members walk along a rope over the small pool under
spraying water. In order to stay upright, team members have rods
with a suction cup in each hand which they can use to stick onto
overhead plates. The team with the most members across the small
pool in the time available wins. In each successful crossing, the
competitors must have stuck a suction cup on each of the ten
available plates. Successive team members can only begin a
traverse when the previous team member has reached plate 5, or is
out of the pool, having fallen in. An exciting event. ««1/2
Obstacle Courses
Telephone Call
Pic Pic Pic Pic Pic
(4 team simultaneous event)
Female team member answers phone, runs through obstacle course
invloving hay bails, ramps, a paddle over the medium-sized pool
in a rubber dinghy and a climb up a rope to get to the guy. Guy
goes back over obstacle course to get to and answer the phone.
High level of athleticism required. Portland and its team captain
Ross Murrell (Victoria) won this event well, particularly over
Newcastle and its skipper David Rankin (steady on boy -- no need
to chuck the phone in rage!). ««««
Bumbling Bees
Pic Pic Pic Pic (4 team simultaneous event)
Dressed up as bees, a male team member runs through a obstacle
course comprising a 'honeycomb' tunnel, a rope 'spider's web' and
a balloon which must be burst by the bee's rear stinger. At the
half-way mark, the bees must climb into a booth full of balloons
and pop them all. They then return through the course, jump into
the air off a small trampoline and land on a large balloon to
complete the event. Melbourne City (Victoria) memorably won this
event with their Joker, unlike Portland. «««
Pic (4 team simultaneous event)
Just a boring event using the horse costumes. Female jockey
rides horse and climbs through suspended rubber rings. 1/2«
Superguy
(4 team separate event)
Male team member must, dressed in a Superman-like costume, run
through an obstacle course involving pushing a train several
meters along some tracks and jumping over small model
sky-scrapers. The Superguy must then don a business suit in a
phone booth and run to his desk where a female 'Lois' hands him
his coffee. The fastest superguy wins. «««
Tweetle Dee Tweetle Dum
Pic Pic
(4 team simultaneous event)
Dressed in bulky foam costumes, male contestants traverse an
obstacle course carrying buckets of water. At one end, the
buckets are filled and at the other they are emptied into a large
measuring cylinder. The winning team is the one that has accrued
the highest water level in their measuring cylinder. Obstacles
include wading pools, ramps and heavy cylindrical objects on the
ground. We are not surprised that Fiona MacDonald was anxious
about some of the competitors' well-being after falls. Roger
Trewavis of Portland (Victoria) was a natural at this event,
despite losing. ««1/2

Dancing Dummies
Pic
(4 team simultaneous event, with 2 elimination heats)
Guys dance with dummy until music ('Let's twist again, like we
did last summer') stops, at which point guys run with dummy over
table, bar, get champagne bottle, run back over bar, table,
dancing area and up onto a very high stool, where they open the
bottle. Fastest to do this wins. ««1/2
Penguins
Grand Prix
(4 team separate event)
On the Astroturf, one team member drives the golf buggy
carrying three other team members around a course. All team
members carry four eggs in a holder on their respective heads.
Loss of these eggs resulted in a time penalty (of two seconds per
egg). Since the course contains ramps, speed bumps, turns and a
tunnel with negative 'headroom', this event was quite
challenging. Melbourne City (Victoria) won this event in a time
of 1:04! Yay! Poor old Jock Howard of Queensland (not to be confused with the
lesser-known current Prime Minister of Australia John) drove
atrociously, requiring an engagement of reverse gear. To his
credit though, Jock took the consequent jokes by Fiona MacDonald
about his driving skills well. As for the South Australian guy
who lost his whole egg holder because he didn't duck under the
tunnel -- good onya maaaate! «««1/2
Monks
(2 heats + final)
Two guys dressed as monks run over some ropes, a cake-like
object (?) and a see-saw while carrying a rubber dinghy and a
paddle each. The two guys then paddle in the dinghy across the
medium-sized pool to a pontoon on which wine and bread are found.
These are collected and paddled back to the end of the pool,
where the 'monks' alight and sit down to enjoy their meal. The
fastest team to do this wins. Melbourne City's Peter Bolton and
Michael Naughton proved to outclass all opposition in this event.
Their experience in triathlons probably helped. One of the pair
showed off his Aussie Rules skills drop-kicking his wine flask
across the stadium, but Melbourne City was sufficiently ahead to
win easily after the flask's retrieval. Jock Howard's hope for
divine intervention apparently fell on deaf ears, but then again,
they were against Melbourne City. «««

Vertical Wall Events
Load the Loft
Pic (4 team simultaneous event)
Team member climbs ladder up vertical wall to 'loft', while other
team members hoist up heavy sack of stuff adjacent to climber. Climber
alights ladder at loft, pulls in sack, detaches sack from rope and places
sack label on outer wall. Climber takes rope down to ground level with
team ground crew team providing resistance so climber doesn't kill
himself. This process is repeated three or four times. Event ends when
whole team stands on pontoon (on land) and all sack labels are on outer wall.
««
Steep Wall Events
Loch Ness Monster
Pic (4 team simultaneous event)
As a tag-team event, competitors carried large 'tiles' with pegs on the
back, a short distance to the steep wall and inserted the tile pegs into
appropriate holes in the steep wall. The shapes of the tiles were of particular
sections of the Loch Ness Monster. As progressive monster neck tiles were placed
on the wall, competitors had to climb higher and higher up the steep wall, carrying their
tile, to place it in its hole. The tiles had footholds on them, and positioned tiles
were used as a ladder. The winning team was the first to stand on the pontoon on
the ground having placed the 'head' tile on the wall. When the head piece was placed
on, the monster's eyes flashed red. ««1/2
Lifebuoys
(4 team simultaneous event)
A classic. This event actually used a not-quite-so steep wall, but suffice to say
that you would have been pretty scared of doing yourself some damage if you fell (especially
if you fell off the side of the wall, as nearly did happen... Cornish and Beinke!). In
this event, male competitors dressed as surf-lifesavers flung a lifebuoy ring up the steep
wall/hill, aiming to catch it on a hook, quoits-style. Then the man pulled himself up the
hill by a rope attached to the ring and gained a foothold on the hook. The process then
repeated, with the hooks on alternating sides on his lane on the hill. At the top of the
hill a female member of an opposition team applied suds and water to the lane, thereby
sending the climbing guy slipping and sliding almost uncontrollably (with near-fateful
consequences). Once the guy got to the top of the hill, he threw his lifebuoy down the
hill. At the base of the hill, a female team member put the ring around her waist
and, while sitting, was dragged up the hill by the climber and another male team member
using the lifebuoy's rope. By this stage most of the suds and water had ran to the bottom
of the hill and/or dried up, so the lady didn't get a fantastically smooth ride on the plastic.
The first team to get the female member to the top of the hill won the event. Starring
Rosaly Shingles and captain Leigh Privett (who was later to be named 'unluckiest Australian
orienteer of 1998'), Wodonga (Victoria) exhibited unmatched skill in this event, easily
quashing all opposition. In the time taken for the second-place-getter to finish, we
believe that Wodonga could have completed this event twice over. We have vowed to
construct this event in our driveway, but safety concerns have caused even us daredevils
to baulk. ««««
Mountain Climbers aka Mountain Climbing
Pic Pic Pic Pic Pic Pic Pic (4 team simultaneous event)
A guy uses a large peg in each hand, inserting them in holes in the steep wall and
pulling themselves up, like on a large 'pegboard'. Once the guy gets to the top of the wall,
a second guy started climbing it. The first team to get the two guys to the top won.
Physically intensive, this event put great strain on the arm muscles; in particular, the
biceps and triceps. South Australian Les Knaggs proved uncannily and frustratingly good
at this event, to the dismay of all opponents. Poor Wodongans Privett and Grant had little
success at this event; obviously the Privett factor was not in force.

Shallow Wall Events
Tinny Race
(4 team simultaneous event)
This event involved a large 'tinny' mounted on rails, containing one male competitor. The
rails ran up the shallow wall/hill. The tinny was pushed down the hill, and the guy in it had
to push himself and the tinny back up the hill by pushing a long pole against the sleepers of the
rails. This was repeated once. At the top of the hill, the guy in the tinny opens a large
ringpull in the wall and lets polystyrene 'beer' into the tinny. Tom Heenan was strong in this
event, but disappointingly finished second, thus dragging down his team's (Nareen's) average.
Kevin Beinke, captain of Port Broughton, South Australia, showed the strain of this event. «««1/2
Jaunty Jalopies
Pic Pic Pic Pic Pic (4 team simultaneous event)
A male and female team member in a non-powered car roll down a
shallow hill, through a water trough and retrieve a spanner. The
car is then hauled back up the hill by other team members using a
rope. This is repeated and then the car is 'driven' back down to
the petrol pump, where the male team member puts the petrol hose
into the car and gets in. The team to have completed this task in
the fastest time wins. We cannot believe Wodonga (Victoria) lost
this event. «««
Emu Race
(2 elimination heats + final)
A direct copy of the 'Ostrich Race' from Jeux sans Frontières, Emu Race involved competitors in emu costumes running down the shallow wall to retrieve large rings (on stands) at the base of the slope. The emus must pick up the rings with their mouths, which are opened with a cable running down to the competitor inside the large costume. There are fewer rings than competitors, so there are some elimination heats and then a final. «1/2
Fetch the Bones aka Find the Bones
Pic Pic Pic Pic (4 team simultaneous event)
Competitors in dog costumes run down the shallow wall and dive into a large haystack in an effort to find large bones. Competitors who are unable to find bones are eliminated, and eventually the first and second to find the bones get the points. Not recommended for hay-fever sufferers. ««
Astroturf event that aren't Obstacle Courses
Hang the Bottle aka Bottle Babies
Pic
(4 team simultaneous event)
Two guys from each team, dressed as babies, including nappies and squeaky dummies, stack four
large blocks (labelled 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D') on each other. On the top of the blocks is placed
a large baby's milk bottle. This bottle is tipped with a magnet. The two guys lift the tall stack
of blocks, careful not to drop it (which happens often). The stack is carried over two rows of hay
bales. Then the guys have to manoever the stack so that the bottle magnet sticks to a magnet suspended
from a tower. The team to 'Hang the Bottle' first wins. Guidance on positioning is provided by a
female team member with a megaphone. Not greatly physically demanding, this event was a test of
communication and co-ordination. «««1/2
Piggy Race
Pic(4 team simultaneous event)
Not actually having much to do with pigs, this event involved several team members wearing shoes
attached to planks. These planks were, in turn, attached to each other with a metal rod so that the
peoples' feet moved in a cycloid motion. This event looks very uncomfortable.
«
Frankenstein
Pic Pic Pic
(4 team separate event)
Female team member in peroxide wig with legs & feet tied together jumps through course, placing
flowers in flower pots while a guy from an opposition team dressed as Frankenstein's monster
(complete with bolt through neck, block feet and chained ankles) chases her. The team whose lady
plants the most flowers before the monster catches her wins. ««
Sack Race
Pic Pic
(4 team simultaneous event)
Pretty much self-explanatory. Teams jump up and down the course in a large sack picking up extra
team members at each end of the course. First to finish with full sack of people wins.
«
Living Donuts
Pic
(4 team simultaneous event)
One of the more humourously named events (Living Daylights, get it?), Living Donuts was indeed
imaginative. A stack of car tyre inner tubes was placed over a team member, who, holding them in
position with two cables, ran the length of the course (~50 meters). Then the person in the tyre
inners was placed on his side and rolled by two other team members back down the course. The winning
tactic in this event was to hold the tyres tightly in position so that the rolling movement was even,
smooth and straight. Failure to do this by some teams provided funny moments for viewers of their consequent
loss. «««1/2
Musketeers
Pic Pic (2 heats + final)
Two guys heavily kitted-out in grotesque musketeers' costumes are swung pendulum-style over the
Astroturf by team-mates. Each musketeer bears a fencing sword, which he uses to try to pierce the
water-containing clear plastic bladder which represents the opposition musketeer's abdomen. The
winner is the musketeer that has lost the least amount of water after a certain amount of time. An
aim of this event is to try and pierce the bladder as low as possible so that a greater weight of water pushes the water more rapidly through the hole made. The visibility of the muskateers must have been extremely poor, and we have
doubts about the safety of this event (See results). As for
the scoring system, this probably wasn't quite 100% fair since certain linesladies (Chandelle
hem hem) placed some pressure on the bladder, thus increasing the apparent amount of remaining
water in some of the teams (but not Victoria, though). An original idea.
«««
Flower Power
Family aka Peanuts aka Assaulted Peanuts
Pic Pic Pic (2 heats + final)
Four members of each team each wear a large peanut costume and are linked by fabric arms. This
penut 'family' must walk through a course on the Astroturf. This involved negotiating a series of
large salt-shakers. Another dangerous event considering the risks of a fall, of which there were
many, especially by Frankston (Vic). If one person fell, the remainder
of the team was dragged down with them. ««
Rollin Hoops
Pic (4 team simultaneous event)
Made famous by Box Hill (Vic) (and, to a lesser extent
Melbourne City (Vic)), Rollin Hoops involved two guys fitting into a
large hollow cylinder with an egg-shaped cross-section. The two guys then had the task of shifting
their centre of gravity within the cylinder such that it rolled down the Astroturf.
A number of balloons had to be burst in the process (by rolling over them). Once the hoops had got to
the end of their Astroturf lanes, they had to be rolled back in the same fashion to the starting line.
The first team back won. «««1/2
Roman Wreckers
(2 heats + final)
Roman Wreckers was another event made famous by Box Hill (Vic). Two
guys attempted to build a Roman 'temple' using several parts of pillars and two roof pieces, while two ladies from
the opposing team catapulted silver balls at the temple in an attempt to destroy the temple. The team with
the most temple pieces in position at the end of the time available won. One of the builders often took on the role
of deflecting the incoming silver balls. The potentially apocalyptic damage of a single well-aimed silver ball
meant that the winner of any given heat or final was not apparent until the last fraction of a second. In may
cases, a video replay was required in order to determine the winner, since the results were close and competitors,
in the frantic temple-building continued to place pieces on the structure after the siren had sounded. A classic.

See Saw
Pic Pic Pic Pic Pic (2 heats + final)
What can we say about See Saw? Basically don't expect to come out of it without having lost some teeth and
sustained serious musculo-skeletal damage. A pillar à la Roman Wreckers had to be assembled.
This was effected by a bloke carrying the individual blocks (large) over a large metal ladder which was pivoted at
the centre, like a see-saw. A counter-balance (another team member) was required since the block-carrier was
not allowed to touch the ground at the other side. The pillar was thus constructed by carefully placing the blocks
on each other while maintaining balance. Since this was a two heats and a final event, time pressures ensured
that the required delicate balancing-act was rarely seen. Competitors were frequently catapaulted high into the
air, often landing on the painstakingly-assembled pillar (funny if you were supporting an opposition team).
Combat team members were on-hand to catch people falling from the sky, but usually missed, allowing them to fall on
the 1-inch-thick floor padding. A product of a sadistic mind. «««

Chariot Race
Dairy Maid Derby
(2 heats + final)
Female team member rides on a cart that is hauled by two guys dressed as a horse. The cart has hugely differing
wheel sizes, giving the rider (and her large milk pails) a very rough ride. Just watch out for
Padthaway-esque obstruction of opposition teams on the 180 degree turns! Quite an
entertaining event, but not for the rider, since motion sickness is inevitable. «««

Ball Events
Reach for the Sun
(4 team simultaneous event)
A guy jumping on a trampoline tossed a rubber ball up to a basketball hoop which was mounted very high up.
A female assistant passed the balls up to the guy. As the balls accumulated in the net attached to the
basketball hoop, a large 'sun' was raised. The team whose sun was raised to the top won, and this was
signalled by an explosion at the basketball hoop. This event is memorable for its poor videotape splicing
and the fact that Frankston (Vic) (shooter Frank 'ston' Gleeson), actually received some points (2 of them for
finishing second). ««

Noah's Knockout Pic Pic Pic (4 team separate event)
Team members dressed in various animal costumes run out of the ark and around a semi-circular
track and back into the ark, avoiding a heavily kitted-out opposition Noah who tries to knock them down.
The Noah is tethered to the ground and his movement is consequently limited. The team with the most animals
around the semi-circular track at the end of the time available wins. This event is infamous for the
injury of Derek van Veldhuisen (Portland (Vic) Noah), which unfortunately
put him out of the competition. It was probably little consolation that Portland won that
event. In our opinion, the fox, with its least cumbersome costume had it far too easy. ««
