Play Terminology
Play terms that describe what is going on in the game..
-Attack Zone-
Actually the defensive zone but to the offender it is the Attack Zone because they are trying to score a goal.
-Back Hander-
Shot taken by a player using the back of his stick. Usually hard to score since the player is using the opposite curve if his stick.
-Body Check-
Occurs when a player throws his body against and opponent to check or block his progress.
-Break Away-
When the offensive player with the puck skates past the defenders in the Attack Zone creating a one-on-one situation with the goalie.
-Changing Lines-
Change of players, done so to always have fresh players on the ice. Hockey is the only sport in the world that players change up while the game is still in play.
-Deke-
Method of favoring to one side, controlling the puck, then faking out the goalie or opponent by quickly switching to the opposite side.
-Full Strength-
5 on 5 hockey when no penalties are called. Excluding the goalie.
-Hip Check-
Occurs when a defender uses his hip to block an opponents forward progress.
-Line-
A group of the 5 movable players(goalie excluded). Some lines have 4 usually because of penalties. Some examples of lines: checking line, power play line, penalty kill line, scoring line 1, scoring line 2, etc...
-One Timer-
Redirection of the puck. A player passes it to his teammate, with out stopping the puck the player lines the puck up while it is still in motion towards him and shoots towards the net. Usually cross ice pass. The hardest shot to accomplish but is hard for the goalie to stop because it is such a fast play.
-On the fly-(change of players)
Change of players, without a face-off. Player shoots the puck in the defenders zone and then that line returns to the bench to rest while another line takes their place.
-Penalty Shot-
Awarded to a player that was interfered with while trying to score. The puck is placed at dead center ice and the player moves in on a one-on-one situation with the goalie to try to score.
-Power Play-
Occurs when a team sends all its players except the goalie into the opponent's defensive zone in an attempt to score while the opposing team is at less than full strength.
-Poke Check-
Occurs when a player jabs with his stick, trying to poke the puck away from an opponent.
-Slap Shot-
Shot taken by a player that is the most powerful shot but also the most inaccurate. Uses full arm extension and strength. Fastest shot recorded: Al McInnis of the St. Louis Blues, 102mph.
-Spin-o-Rama-
Offensive play by a player to confuse the defense. The player quickly does a 360 degree spin, confusing the defense of which direction he is going.
-Stick-Handling-
Method of controlling and moving the puck by tapping it from side to side with the stick.
-Wrist Shot-
Not the fastest shot but the most accurate. Achieved by the snapping of your wrist.
