Hockey Terminology


Center Face-off
Origin of play, the referee drops the puck in the center face-off circle between two opponents facing off in the initial control.

Center
Forward player in the center. Predominantly offensive.

Face-off Circles
Surrounding face-off spots, the face-off circles create the border for which within face-offs will occur.

Blue Lines
Marking off the neutral zone in the center of the rink, the blue lines create the borders for the attacking zones and the defending zones.

Center Line
Absolute center line of the rink. The center line splits the neutral zone as well as opponents' zones.

Goal
Scoring point for teams, the goal is just under 6 feet wide and 4 feet high. A goal is scored if the puck entirely crosses the goal line, between the posts and under the crossbar.

Goal Line
Extending the width of the rink, the goal line denotes the scoring area between the goal posts.

Attack Zone
The area in which an opponent's goal is situated. Furthest zone from team's goal.

Neutral Zone
Dividing the Attacking and Defending zones, the Neutral zone is open territory.

Goal Keeper
Key player, and often unsung hero, the Goal Keeper is well padded and defends against attacks on team's goal.

Left Defense
Rear player on left side. Predominantly defensive.

Left Wing
Forward player on left side. Predominantly offensive.

Right Defense
Rear player on right side. Predominantly defensive.

Right Wing
Forward player on right side. Predominantly offensive.
