Spotlight on:
The 1998 Padres

With champagne spraying as wildly as Los Angeles pitchers had been throwing, the Padres celebrated their second division title in three years. The NL West might be won, but the quest is far from over.

"This is the first step," said resurgent slugger Greg Vaughn, who singled in the go-ahead run in the five-run sixth as the Padres rallied from a 7-0 deficit to win 8-7 on Saturday night. "We're not satisfied with just getting there. We want to win it.".

Said Padres GM Kevin Towers: "You saw tonight how important it is to be at home. You've got 60,000 people waving towels and going crazy and getting the guys going. That was one of the reasons why we rallied from seven down."

The Padres, who scored three runs in the fifth, will advance to the playoffs for just the third time in 30 seasons. In 1996, they were swept by St. Louis in the first round of the playoffs.

AROUND THE HORN ...
on Sept. 12, 1998

The Padres set a season attendance mark at 2,254,491, breaking the record of 2,193,668 set in 1985. ... Trevor Hoffman has saved all four Padres victories against the Dodgers since his brother took over as Los Angeles' manager June 22. .. Padres left-hander Mark Langston retired one batter in the seventh in just his second relief appearance in his career. Since coming out of the Mariners' bullpen on Oct. 1, 1986, at Chicago, he had made 331 straight starts. ... The Padres blast music from the sound system at levels normally heard in NBA arenas, and played "Another One Bites the Dust" so loud after Stan Spencer struck out Dave Mlicki in the second that it overloaded the main amplifier. The system was down for two innings.
