Video games remain one of my favorite hobbies. I play them frequently, mostly on weekends. Here are some of my favorite video games and a little about each of them.

JOHN MADDEN FOOTBALL
The Madden series is the best sports series on the market. First issued in 1992, John Madden football has become a great seller. The best Madden for the Sega Genesis was Madden 93, with players such as Gaston Green and Christian Okoye making appearances. The great intro music was also a key. In Madden 94, NFL players first had their names in the game along with team insignias. When Madden moved to the Playstation in 1997, a new era of football gaming developed. The game became faster and more exciting to play. It also had many more options. The Madden series is a classic and one of the greatest games of all time.

CONTRA
The Contra series is one of the best action series of all time. However, the best games were issued for the Nintendo. Contra and Super C are video game classics, two player action games for the ages. Although codes taint the value of defeating these games, the games remain very difficult without codes. Operation C, issued for the Game Boy, is also a tremendous game. Contra Adventure for SNES is another really good game, possibly the most underrated in the Contra series. Although it is not widely recognized, it is a very good game and one that should be purchased if possible. Contra: Legacy of War, issued for the Playstation, is also a two player game. However, the view is totally from overhead, which partially ruins the Contra legacy. The game is still a very good game, a typical Contra shootout-style affair. C: The Contra Adventure is a 1 player game similar in style to the Contra's for NES. However, the graphics are much cooler and the game would be a great pickup for anyone with a Playstation.

DOUBLE DRAGON
The Double Dragon series is a classic fighting series. On the NES there are 3 tremendous games. Double Dragon, a single player arcade style game, is extremely difficult. The final bosses, a man with a machine gun and Jimmy, are tough. Beating the machine gunner is much harder than beating Jimmy. The machine gunner can be beaten by using the hair pull and throw. Jimmy can be beaten by the moves used to beat a regular enemy. Double Dragon II, a multiplayer game, is a great game to play with a partner. However, the jumps in level 3 are tough to make, but the final boss isn't very hard. Double Dragon III is another multiplayer game which is difficult to defeat. There are several unique features of Double Dragon III that make it entertaining. After the bosses of boards 2 and 3 are defeated, they join the side of the Double Dragons. They each possess special moves and make the game more fun and strategic. The last board (Egypt) is very difficult. The enemies attempt to trap you into the left corner of the screen on 2 occasions, leaving you helpless. The 3 mummy bosses can be beaten most easily by using Ranzou's dropkick. Ranzou is also very useful in defeating Egyptian goddess Miriam, the game's final boss. She shoots fireballs and pushes you into the walls of the tomb, which inflicts major punishment. The key is to walk in a "v" pattern and to make the most out of the opportunities to hit her, and use jump attacks wisely. Saving nunchucks for her is a wise idea because every hit counts. When she is defeated you learn the fate of all the fighters and of Hiroku, your treasonous tour guide. For Game Boy, Double Dragon is similar to the NES version and is easier to defeat. Double Dragon II is possibly one of the greatest Game Boy games of all time, featuring 10 heart stopping levels. Double Dragon III is another hard game, as the last board mummy boss can be a pain.

This classic series based on the popular cartoon is one of the best. TMNT, a game that tormented kids years ago and tormented us for months, was defeated on December 8, 2000. The game is not like any of the other TMNT games, as it is 1 player and the enemies are not from any of the shows. Only bosses such as Rocksteady, Bebop, and Shredder are the same. Each level is difficult but there are ways to make it easier, such as saving a turtle on boards 3-5. Shredder can be defeated by throwing ninja stars at him from a distance. TMNT II (arcade game), is one of the most popular games ever. The Technodrome is a difficult board, fighting Shredder and Krang along with other boss-type characters. Shredder is very tough, having the ability to zap you with his gun or slashing you with his sword. The key is to focus on the Shredder with the helmet on. TMNT III is another game which takes hours to defeat and can be very hard. The bosses are particularly difficult, especially as the game moves on, unless a technique is discovered. Defeating Shredder and Krang consecutively can be a difficult task, especially when Krang splits in 2. However, it you get up to Shredder with enough lives, he can be defeated by using hit-and-run tactics and avoiding his beam. TMNT 4, for SNES, is very easy to defeat and really presents no challenge to an experienced gamer. The only difficult part is when you have to throw foot soldiers into the screen at Shredder. TMNT for the Genesis is also a joke as it presents no challenge to a rookie gamer. For the Game Boy, TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan is relatively easy to beat. TMNT 2: Back From the Sewers presents a greater challenge and is vastly underrated. TMNT 3: Radical Rescue is very hard to find in stores and I have never played this game.

MEGA MAN
There are so many different Mega Man games that it is hard to find somewhere to start. There are Mega Man games available for Game Boy, NES, SNES, N64, and the Playstation. The best part of Mega Man games is using the weapons of the previously defeated bosses and the Rush Jet and Rush Marine, which let you fly around and go underwater, respectively. Dr. Wily is the boss of each game and is a challenge each time. However, it is definitely worth trying a Mega Man game, especially one of the Nintendo games.
MORTAL KOMBAT
The best fighting game of all time, this instant classic will never be beaten. Fatalities and great specialty moves make MK a great game for anyone who wants to fight it out. Since it was a tremendous hit in the arcade, it quickly became a home hit. The fatalities are especially popular, as kids love to rip heads off and knock helpless victims into the pit of spikes.

STREETS OF RAGE
The Streets of Rage series is another classic video game series. Featuring cool characters with great specialty moves this game is a must play. Dual playing also helps, because multiplayer games are the best under most circumstances. Streets of Rage I allows you to call on a police car whenever you need help, most useful agains the bosses. There are several irritating bosses, the fat guys who blow fire inflict damage and cannot be body slammed. The boss of the game is not too difficult although he looks similar to the boss of Double Dragon, with his machine gun. Both players must select "NO" when he asks to join him in order to gain a good ending. Streets of Rage II is another cool game with new characters, including a roller blading character. The game does not include the police car but does have more specialty moves. The bosses are similar to characters from Street Fighter II, but obviously lacking the specialty moves.

GOLDEN AXE
The Golden Axe series for the Sega Genesis is tremendous. Golden Axe I and II are similar games, both multiplayer and featuring 3 characters, a man, a woman, and an elf. The elf is the most powerful character, possessing an axe which is a great weapon. However, the woman boasts the best magic, calling upon a dragon to defeat enemies. The great features of this game include the magical powers and riding on fire breathing dragons. The bosses of this game aren't very difficult, although on hard mode the game could cause trouble. The boss of the game possesses the Golden Axe. He can be defeated by using full blasts of magic and by the version of jump kicking when you slash the knight with your weapon.

CASTLEVANIA
The Castlevania series is another classic series. It even features games on the Nintendo 64 and Playstation. The Playstation and Nintendo 64 versions are great because the graphics are a big improvement over the old NES graphics. The special abilities of the vampire hunter are also a great plus. There is a Castlevania Bloodlines available for the Genesis. Castlevania 4 for Super Nintendo has the best graphics of any pre N64/PS Castlevania game and presents a great challenge. This game is as good as any Castlevania game. Game Boy also has great Castlevania games. Each game is single player but that doesn't stop from making them classic games. Fighting demons and vampires is always fun, especially when you have a whip and some magical weapons along the way.

SUPER MARIO BROTHERS
The Mario series is a Nintendo original and always a classic. Super Mario Bros. came with the NES system, so everyone got acquainted with the game. The game involved a lot of crazy jumps so that could pose problems for some. Super Mario World for SNES is a great game featuring over 90 boards, although all do not have to be beaten in order to defeat the game thanks to some clever shortcuts.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG
This is another of the best video games series, only for Game Gear and the Genesis. Since this came with Sega it can be inferred that it is the Mario Bros. of Genesis. That would be correct. It is only 1 player and has many games of the same series following it. However, Sonic the Hedgehog is a classic game. In each of them you must fight Dr. Robotnik after every board, but he was never known to be tough. The hardest part of the Sonic games is surviving the regular parts of the boards and getting enough rings to earn free lives.
