At present there is only one rugby club in Ghana - Accra Rugby Club. The club has been around in many shapes and forms since the mid-fifties. No records exist from this period, so little is known about the early history of the club. Moving to more recent times, the early seventies, Accra had a thriving club and could easily field two teams. There were regular Saturday matches at Legon, which attracted in the region of 100+ spectators. In addition to the Accra teams there were also teams in Obuasi and Akwatia.
Skipping some more time, we come to the mid 1990s. At this stage the Club played on the Accra Polo Club Pitch - so you had to be careful where you were tackled. In 1996 Ghana hosted two international touring teams, one from South Africa and one from England. They played a charity match at the National Stadium in support of Max Brito, an Ivorian Player paralysed by a neck injury in the 1995 World Cup. Famous names involved included from England: Dean Richards, Martin Johnston, Tim Rodber, Neil Back, Kieran Bracken, Will Greenwood, Darren Garforth, Matt Dawson and Paul Grayson and from South Africa Naas Botha (who fortunately left Darren Scott behind) and Darnie (?) Gerber. Accra played Lagos in a curtain raiser and got stuffed 20-5!
A minor slump in interest followed the excitement of 1996 but the club has since been rejuvenated. In 1998,thanks to the sponsorship from Guinness and the support of the University of Ghana (Legon), we managed to build a pitch and club house the first permanent home in the clubs history. The inaugural match was held in February 1999 against Club Lambert from Abidjan. We remained undefeated at home until October 2000 when some very large chaps from HMS Iron Duke took an under-strength Accra side to the cleaners.
Matches are now mainly restricted to visiting navy ships (French and British) but we are hoping to restart fixtures with Club Lambert from Ivory Coast - these were rather rudely interupted by a Coup at the end of 1999 which went on to develop into Civil War. At the end of 2003 we played host to a delegation from the IRB who were in country to assess the Ghana Rugby Association's progress in developing rugby across the country, we played 2 games against the Ghana National side and did rather well - much to the chagrin of the (now ex-)national coach.
