Middleton Football -- Program History

Throughout the last two decades the Middleton football program has established itself as a successful well-disciplined and hard-nosed football organization. Middleton football players, from the first day of freshman practice, are instilled with the tools to become champions. As the players grow, so do their confidence, pride, and determination.

These tools peak at the varsity level, where Middleton is recognized state wide for their success. The Cardinals have won two state championships, and twelve conference titles in their history. Most recently, in 1999, Middleton earned a 12-1 record and advanced to the semi-finals of the state playoffs.

The difference between Middleton and other programs throughout the state is confidence and pride. Coach Kurt Gundlach has been quoted as saying, “This program was built on big games.” This has never been more evident than in recent years, when Middleton has played well when it mattered. For example, in 1997, the Cardinals were tested against Beloit Memorial. In that game, both teams were 6-0 heading into the match up. Middleton’s confidence and determination to be champions was the number one factor in that victory. Just two years later, in 1999, underdog Middleton dethroned conference champion Sun Prairie in a week one battle. In 2001 for a first round playoff game, the Cardinals went on the road to face the undefeated, number two-ranked team in the state. Once again, pride pulled through. “We played our hearts out,” one player said after the game. Nobody thought they would come away with a victory that night, except those within.

The following is just a snapshot of Middleton’s success in recent years. As you look all you see is numbers, but within those numbers are memories and emotions, which have touched so many.
