My Red Sox Collection

Fenway Park has been home to the Boston Red Sox (and occationally the Boston Braves and New England Patriots) for 87 years. It is the oldest park in the majors. Also the smallest, it only seats 33,000. Those are the main two reasons that the Red Sox want it gone.

The Red Sox are planning a field that would be almost exactly like Fenway (even the same name) except, it would have 10,000 more seats and other improvments that will make it look and feel like the old Fenway, yet work a lot better.

When the Red Sox annnounced "NEW BALLPARK", I became scared. I thought that they would implode the best place to watch a baseball game in the country and build an ugly lump of concrete, similar to the Kingdome in Seattle. But, I like their plans and Fenway Park will not see explosives.

The new park will have the same dimensions, plus most of The Wall and all of Pesky's Pole will be taken too. A large portion of the Green Monster, the infield, the manual scoreboard, and the brick wall outside Gate A on Yawkey Way (shown below) would be saved.

Fenway Park Trivia:
1. What year was the large video board added in center field?
2. Who hit the longest measurable home run in Fenway Park?
3. Prior to 1995, what was the distance down the left field line measured at?
4. What was special about the retired numbers 9 4 1 8 in that order?
5. What was "Duffy's Cliff"?

Answers:
1. 1976
2. Ted Williams-The ball landed in Section 42, Row 37, Seat 21. The seat is now painted red.
3. 315 feet. Many other measurements put the distance between 304-309 ft. It is now listed at 310 ft.
4. The numbers read 9/4/18, the eve of the first game of the last World Series that the Red Sox won.
5.Duffy’s Cliff was a 10-foot-high hill in front of the left field wall from the time the park was opened, extending from the foul pole to the flag pole in center; named after the Red Sox’s Duffy Lewis, the master of defensive play on the cliff. The incline was not reduced in size until 1934.
