"Hmm I'll fly that over my house next time I'm home"

The three lions shield was used by the early Plantagenets.  At first there were only two lions.  The middle one is our period (i.e. WOTR) - previously there had been more fleur de lys.  I think it was Edward III who first quartered the arms, as a way of showing his claim to the French throne.
