[Biography]

Summer Sanders had her first taste at international competition at the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle. She captured three gold medals and ended Janet Evans' four-year undefeated streak in the 400-Meter Individual Medley.

As one of the nation's top recruits out of high school, Summer headed to Stanford University in 1990. In two years on the swim team, she won six individual titles and four relay championships en route to back-to-back NCAA Swimmer of the Year awards and helped Stanford capture a national championship.

At the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials, Summer qualified for an unparalleled four individual events, winning three, and added a relay to her Olympic agenda. Summer came back from Barcelona as the most decorated U.S. swimmer, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze medal.

Summer retired from swimming in December 1993 to pursue a career as a model and commentator. With the cover of Speedo's catalogue and feature articles in Sports Illustrated and Newsweek magazines to her credit, Summer has been an analyst for CBS Sports and was the hostess for MTV's sports show Sandblast during its first season.

In April 1995, Sanders announced her return to competitive swimming. This proved not enough time to prepare for the Olympic Trials where she failed to qualify in any events. NBC quickly invited Summer to be a swimming commentator at the Atlanta Summer Games.

Summer filmed a scene for a movie with Tom Cruise called Jerry Maguire. The movie centered around Tom, the title character, who played a sports agent. Summer played an superstar swimmer whose name was, of course, Summer. It was released December 13. She also spent four days in Rwanda with Olympic speed skater Johann Olav Koss in early May as part of her contributions to Olympic Aid.

Summer is currently the host of the Nickelodeon gameshow, Figure It Out which is on everyday at 6:00. The contestants on the show try to stump the celebrity panelist who try to guess the contestant's special talent. You can also catch Summer every Friday on the Lifetime channel where she is a sideline reporter for the WNBA game of the week.

We here at The Unofficial Summer Sanders Homepage would like to congratulate Summer on her recent marriage to fellow swimmer Mark Henderson.

[Quotes]
"Barcelona was an incredible experince, but I now realize that competing in a U.S.-hosted Olympics is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

"Swimming in college was the best. I loved being part of a team."

"As the excitement for Atlanta grows, I have realized that this event is too big not to at least give it my best shot."

"It never felt like I missed out because of swimming, but I know I've gained something."

"When you get nervous, don't think about it. Just go on instinct."

"I guess 10 and a half months just wasn't enough in that last 50 meters. Obviously I'm disappointed because you don't like your last race to be eighth-place, but I'm looking beyond that. This really isn't a tragedy it's just a learning experience."

"I'm just a normal girl. I'm not like the gymnasts who move away from home and everything."
