South Carolina Cheerleading

1998-1999 season

"Home of the Fighting Gamecocks"

The University of South Carolina's Cheerleading Program has been going through recent changes since last. Behind our new Varsity coach Toni Maksim and a dedicated squad the University of South Carolina placed 8th in the nation at the 1999 UCA National Championship in Orlando, Florida. The team made it to national comietition by winning an invitation to compete. Out of the limited invites given out in the South Eastern Conference Carolina received one. Receiving the invitation was a mix of of the effort put fourth by the entire team and those friends and family members that supported them. The ranking is very well earned because USC overcame injuries, had one month to put togeather a routine, and only competed with seven guys. We also had the help of four outstanding Jr. Varsity members.

Now cheerleading is more than leading a crowd. It has evolved into it's own sport of powerful movements, rythmical music, spirited chants, kick butt dances, weight lifting, and tumbling all rolled up into one. Teamwork is the focus of cheerleading today! Without the trust and teamwork you have only matching specators, with good seats, yelling for a team. Cheerleading is a sport which involves precision, timing, charisma, flexibility, cooperation, and lots of hard work.Instead of throwing a little ball, we throw a girl. We don't just run down a court or across a field, we tumble across it. If a baseball player doesn't catch the ball he stops and picks it up. If we don't catch our girls, the paramedics stop and pick her up.

CHEER WITHOUT FEAR

I am human and that is my greatest weakness, but I don't let that stop me and that is my greatest asset. (J. Hamilton Gatz, 1996)
