ERIE SEAWOLVES
Eastern League

SeaWolves is another name for Pirates.

The SeaWolves were originally the NY-Penn League Welland Pirates.  When the Pirates moved to Erie, the team wanted to keep the connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team's parent club, but also make a connection to Erie's naval history, being the port where Perry's fleet was built during the War of 1812.

When the SeaWolves advanced from the Class-A NY-Penn League to the Class-AA Eastern League, the team decided to keep the popular nickname.

ROCHESTER AMERICANS
American Hockey League

Rochester's nickname came at the beginning of the franchise, when Rochester had a working agreement with the Montreal CANADIENS. Since Montreal were the CANADIENS, Rochester became the AMERICANS.

MILWAUKEE ADMIRALS
International Hockey League

For the 1970-71 season, the name was changed from the Wings to the ADMIRALS.  Businessmen William Chimo and Erwin Merar agreed to sponsor the team.  Merar was the regional distributor for the Admiral Appliance Company and so the team was named the ADMIRALS.
