History of the Farr 740 Sport

Farr International, Inc. was founded in 1982 by Russell Bowler and Bruce Farr with the objective to promote and sell boats, and designs produced by Farr Yacht Design. Bruce Farr is President of Farr Yacht Design Ltd.

If anyone is interested in copies of the original Farr 740 Sport plans, follow this Plans Link.

The Farr 740 was originally built by Sea Nymph in New Zealand. We now know that there are Farr 740 Sports moulds in storage at Austral Yachts, Hackham, S.A. and the Farr 7500 moulds are controlled by Binks Yachts of Somerton Park, S.A. When last saw sighted, the deck mold of the 740 Sports had collapsed and was a writeoff.

At one stage it was mooted that Farr Clubman's would be built (this is in the days prior to the Austral Clubman 8; a Farr 740 Sports hull with a Farr 7500 deck) but it never got off the ground.

David Hogg, of ROSS 650 YACHTS , a company in South Australia that produces the Spider range of sports sailers as well as the Ross 650's, has the mould for the Farr 740 Sports keel if anyone is ever interested in replacing their keels.

Russell Gardner has posted photos of some serious modifications to the design of his Dad's Safarri. I have added them here but will rearrange the page to better accommodate these and any other photos submitted by owners. Note that you can send original photos and I will copy and return if requested.

Contributions to these pages are welcome as are any opinions or suggestions. Please contact us at ricedg@octa4.net.au and I will put you on our mailout list for any updates to the site.
