Week #1
Well...football season has finally arrived. McGill did get off to a good start in their season opener against the Queen's Golden Gaels. The Redmen did come from behind for a 20-18 victory thanks to consistent defensive work. McGill's offence didn't click for most of the first half but showed signs of life in the second 30 minutes. Maybe it is just a little too early in the season.

Week #2
This should have been an easy win for the home team, but that is not what happened. Laval beat McGill 18-11 and made the Redmen scurry back to their dressing room with their heads hanging low. Laval didn't deserve to win the game but McGill certainly did deserve to lose. The players must face this loss as well as last year's defeat to a team that isn't even close to a top 10 ranking.

Week #3
On the road things did not get any better. Queen`s defeated the Redmen by a score of 21-7. Since this game was on the road, I have nothing to say concerning the play of the McGill team. See ya next week.

Week #4
Can you imagine things getting this bad? For a team that had a very high ranking prior to week #1 and now be out of the playoff picture, these guys have got alot to think about. Bishop's ended up with a 21-11 win and again the McGill offence did little to produce points on the board. The game could have been a bit closer if McGill's defence had come up with a couple of big turnovers like in previous weeks. If they Redmen cannot create points with their offence, it will be a sad season.

'96-97 CIAU Lineups of Various Teams

The 1996-1997 leason looks very promising for the McGill Redmen hockey team. I have included a list of various '96-97 CIAU Hockey Team Lineups based on the games I have attended thus far. This page will be updated somewhat frequently based on the team's home games. Please check this link every couple week or so.

McGill Redmen Hockey Weekend of February 14 & 15, 1997.

Friday 14-Feb-97 McGill 5 Guelph 3 Final

Saturday 15-Feb-97 McGill 5 Toronto 3 Final

McGill improves its record to 13-9-2 with a couple of wins this weekend. The Redmen needed the wins to improve their position in the standings now that the regular season is coming to a close. On Saturday February 22, McGill faces the Concordia Stingers for the Corey Cup. This game is in the afternoon and starts at 3:00pm. On Tuesday February 25, the OUAA starts the semi-finals as 3rd place will face the 2nd place team.

Some weak goals caused Toronto to yank their starting goalie and replace hime with Rob Dykeman. Some fans certainly had some fun with this goalie's name. Need I say more? Kelly Nobes didn't seem to play as hard as he usually does but he certainly didn't look out of place. Kelly comes to play every game and even when he has an off game he still stands out. Just that he didn't seem to stand out as much as he usaully does.

McGill Redmen Hockey Weekend of Jan 30 & Feb 01, 1997.

Thursday 30-Jan-97 McGill x Concordia x Final

Saturday 01-Feb-97 McGill 2 UQTR 0 Final

McGill showed up and played well to defeat the number one ranked Patriotes. The defensive game worked well to contain UQTR's offense and come out with a valuable 2 points. Again this was entertaining hockey as was the previous home game that eneded in a 2-2 tie.

McGill Redmen Hockey Weekend of November 29 & 30, 1996.

Friday 29-Nov-96 Ottawa 8 McGill 7 Final

The Redmen had a horrible 1st period on Friday night against the Ottawa GeeGees. Ottawa got out to a 4-0 lead very early. The period ended 6-2 and it looked like McGill was totally unprepared. The GeeGees were a stronger skating team than the previous week's opponents that McGill faced. McGill finally was able to put together a few goals but not enough to pull ahead of Ottawa. The final score was Ottawa 8 McGill 7.

Saturday 30-Nov-96 UQTR 5 McGill 5 OT Final

Saturday night's game was well anticipated as the country's #2 ranked UQTR Patriotes showed up to face the Redmen. CF CABLE-9 taped the game to be broadcasted December 3, 4, & 5. Early in the game it looked like UQTR was going to ruin McGill's weekend with a second straight home loss. But the Redmen scored to come within 1 goal just before the end of the period. The first period ended 3-2 and the Patriotes extended the lead to 5-2 by the end of the 2nd. McGill was almost destined to slip in the rankings. The Redmen did come back in the 3rd with 3 goals to tie the game at 5-5. Almost the entire 3rd period and overtime were spent in the UQTR zone. McGill did have plenty of chances to win the game and the final shots were counted at 43-34 in favour of the Redmen.

The tie should keep McGill in the top 10 rankings for next week.

McGill Redmen Hockey Weekend of November 22 & 23, 1996.

Friday 22-Nov-96 Ryerson 2 McGill 6 Final

Ryerson got out to an early lead by scoring in the first 4 minutes. Unfortunately I missed the goal and only got the announcement as I entered the McConnel Igloo. That was the only time in the game that Ryerson had the lead. McGill came back with goals from Luc Fournier and Nicholas Cantin before the period came to an end.

Both teams scored a goal in the second period and it looked like the score was going to stay that way for quite a while. The second period was getting somewhat physical as the bodychecks were being dished out faster than the coffee at the concessions stand during the intermission. Ryerson having the bigger players appeared to have the ability to out last McGill in this category. McGill kept taking it to the Rams and Ryerson was answering the call. I guess the Rams started to get frustrated as McGill's attack didnt seem to slow down. The Redmen kept up a fast pace and took it to their opponents for the duration of the game. Midway through the second period things looked like they were going to get out of hand. The referee was letting some extra shots to be given on both sides. The second period had a more serious pace than the first did. In the first period both teams seemed to play it cautiously. Kelly Nobes showed his talents by helping the Redmen to their 3rd goal of the game which later proved to be the winner.

The 3rd period went scoreless for some time before McGill added an insurance marker. Both teams had a share of chances, but as the game went on Ryerson appeared to tire. McGill's chances were coming more frequently and the score at this point could have been more than 4-2. McGill got back those lost opportunities in the 3rd with a couple of lucky bounces that lead to a total of three goals in the third. The final score was a good indication of which team was better prepared for the game. The Rams got into penalty trouble as three players were ejected from the game. Ryerson began to lose their cool and the key players on the team were the guys at fault. Ryerson got into penalty trouble late in the game and suddenly the last 5 minutes was full of cheap shots. It seemed like the game was never going to end as the pushing and shoving continued up to the final buzzer. The captain and assistant captain of the Rams should have been the leaders of the team but instead they led the team to the showers earlier than expected.

Although things got ugly late in the game, it was nice to see both teams sincerely shake hands like true gentlemen.

McGill Hilights
#20 Made numerous plays to send his line-mates into scoring position.
#17 Showed good work ethic and leadership in the crucial 2nd period.
#2 Led the Redmen offence early in the game.
#6 Showed strong shooting abilities from the point for 2 late goals.
#30 Didnt allow any weak goals to hurt the team.

Ryerson Hilights
#22 Made life difficult for McGill at every occasion.
#24 Took stupid penalties and didn't work very hard.
#10 Tried to sucker the Redmen into penalties late in the game.
