Breakdown

Packs per Box: 24
Cards per Pack: 3
Cards per Box: 72
Base Set Completion: 55% (55 of 100)
SPs per box: 1
Notable RCs: Jason Chimera (231/404)
Duplicates: 9

First Pack

The exact contents of the pack scanned in and used to find insert odds:

Michael Peca #61
Tony Amonte #18
Dominik Hasek #35

First Pack Comments: Oh wow, look, more nothing! at least I need the Amonte for the set I'm trying to finish. And there was some decent star power so I'll give it a higher rating than the normal dud I pull first out of my boxes. (NOTE: I did not cherrypick by boxes for the first packs, but Vanguard is ridiculously easy to cherrypick, so beware ...)
First Pack Rating: 2.5 / 10

Product Rating: 7.0 / 10

Not a bad product and not a bad box. Vanguard gives you a little taste of everything: parallels, memorabilia, inserts ... the only problem is that with some of those checklists being so cluttered (the memorabilia one especially) that you end up pulling a lot of guys you aren't that enthustiastic about. I also felt that instead of 3 OK insert sets they could have gone with 1 or 2 knockout insert sets and maybe bumped the odds down on them. Right now you'll only get one of each type of insert per box, so completing any of the sets is out of the question.

Design wise these cards are very sharp and if you don't cherrypick our way through the boxes (the packs with inserts and jerseys are so cherrypickable it's unbelieveable ...) the break is a good one. Inserts and parallels are all spread out across the box and with only 3 cards per pack you'll move right on through the break. Rookies come at Pacific's standard 1 per box and the checklist is cluttered as usual.

My box wasn't bad, the inserts were alright ... although Nabokov and Erat have fallen off in the hobby. The parallels were outstanding, that Lemieux Premiere Date is a beauty (a high BV of $100 ... OK so that's way over-priced, but still!) and the Blue Pascal Dupuis isn't horrible either (Dupuis is on his way up!). The Chimera rookie could have been worse, at least Chimera has found a regular spot in an NHL lineup and there is hope for him to keep developing. The memorabilia cards again were just alright. The Lehtinen jersey is very nice, he's quite underrated in the hobby, but Lumme on the reverse dosen't do much for me. The Kovalev and Miller dual jersey is real nice though, especially with Miller taking off in Washington.

Vanguard resembles 2000-01 Vanguard very closely, so if you broke a lot of that you may not want to get into this product. having been out on the market awhile the price on these boxes has dropped dramatically, and that makes these some nice, relatively cheap boxes to get. You'll get the rookie card, two dual jerseys, and some nice parallels/inserts. Not bad for a bargain basement price. If you can find a nice deal on SEALED boxes, go for it.

And like I always say when talking about 01-02 Vanguard, DON'T BUY SINGLE PACKS OR OPENED BOXES ... the inserts and jerseys are pathetically easy to pick out, you'll be left only with the chance of a rookie or a parallel, and that probably won't be worth what you'll pay. Stick to the sealed boxes when dealing with Vanguard.
