Not a bad effort by UD, but not great either. There's some stuff to be very excited about in this year's Upper Deck. Just not nearly enough to please in general.

The good part of this Upper Deck is a return to the 1:4 Young Guns RC. Last year UD1 went with SSP'd RCs, which was just ridiculous. This year you get 6 rookies per box once again. Unforetunately the checklist is very cluttered and pulling top stars is still rough, but still, six rookies is better than none.

And the photography is beautiful in this set as well. Best UD has had since 1998-1999 without a doubt. Great card design and the backs of the cards look very stylish. This is a great base set to collect.

The inserts are where UD1 starts to fail. The normal foil inserts look OK, the design could use some work, but overall it's not that bad. The jersey inserts coudl use some serious work though. The NHL Best Jerseys are some of the ugliest jersey cards I have ever seen. The Shooting Stars design is OK. Just not very impressed with the jersey card design in general in UD1.

My box was pretty dull actually. I got the two most common jersey sets, NHL Best and Shooting Stars. The Marcel Hossa jersey is pretty cool since he doesn't have any, but the NHL Best Tkachuk is ugly and Tkachuk has around 80,000 jersey cards out there that aren't ugly ... so that's not too thrilling. The Young Guns in this box were also subpar, the only real big name was Hamhuis.

It's a nice base set though, a great one to collect. You will get two jerseys, although some ugly and uninteresting in general, and you'll have to take your chances with the 6 rookies. That's not so bad though, a nice base set, two GU, and 6 rookies. One could do worse.
