2003-04 Upper Deck Rookie Update is an odd brand in that it not only updates the rookies from previous UD brands but also includes its own "Rookie Inspirations" RCs.

Why is that a problem? Because UD really scrapped the bottom of the barrell for RCs for that set. Of the six Rookie Inspiration RCs I pulled I had only heard of one of them - Shishankov. The 7 RCs I pulled have a collective 27 NHL games and 2 points (both assists). If you leave off Mike Bishai (who?) that drops to 13 NHL games and 0 points for the other 6. I think this product would have been greatly enhanced if these Rookie Inspirations RCs were left out and instead more update RCs were created and inserted instead.

Other than that, the product is pretty solid, offering approximately three jerseys per box (one jersey insert, one Rookie Inspirations dual jersey, and one SPx Rookie Stars RC Jersey Update) and 3-4 update RCs to go along with the 6 fringe RCs mentioned above. Additionally there are Top draws signature cards found every three boxes. There is plenty to be uncovered within these boxes.

My box was not bad at all, I picked up a nice Alexander Semin Classic Portraits RC and also grabbed a Derek Roy SPx Rookie Stars Jersey RC. The two Nashs in the box were very nice, especially the surprising Top Draws. And while the Glen Murray probably won't book for a penny - Murray is so ridiculously underrated in the hobby - it's a sweet jersey card to have of a 40 goal guy who doesn't have that many out there.

The Rookie Inspirations RCs seemed like a waste of time in this product, but otherwise the product was solid and an enjoyable break.
