Best Pulls Gallery

It's what we all hope for when we buy a pack of cards. You can just see yourself opening the pack up and finding that perfect piece of cardboard that will lead to riches, fame, and infinite happiness. Or something like that ...

Most of the time reality tends to go a tad differently than hoped. But every once in awhile the planets align and out of the freshly bought pack comes something truely extraordinary. This gallery is devoted to those (rare?) instances.

#5: 2003-04 Upper Deck Joe Thornton BuyBack Autograph (1/22)

This came from a single pack purchase. Once I opened the pack and saw the penny sleve, I knew I had a buyback. I was expecting just a more common one out of 200-ish, so once I pulled the card in front of it away and saw Thornton, a pretty big hobby star, that got me quite excited. The 1/22 only added to that, quite a nice pull from a pack I just wanted a Young Gun from!

#9: 2001-02 BAP Signature Peter Bondra Jersey/Stick (/60)

This card makes it on here not because of its rarity but because of the swatches. A sweet, even 3 color jersey watch is amazing, but tacked on to the side of that is a beautiful stick piece displaying the "S" from Easton. Two awesome swatches make this an awesome pull!

#8: 2003-04 Upper Deck Mats Sundin Leaders Patch

I bought a box of UD2 and the very first pack of the box revealed this gem. Nice big swatch from the S in Sundin's nameplate, pretty good design, and certainly long odds. The first box the store got in, the first hour they were open that day, the first pack from that box ... that's pretty nice results.

#7: 2001-02 BAP Update Jarome Iginla Country of Origin Patch (/10)

BAP Update has been quite good to me over the years as well. In total I've bought 4 boxes and I've made away with 2 Country of Origin patches, including this one. Iginla, coming off his great season with Calgary making the SC Finals, has gotten a "informal collection" in my collecting world. Add that to the rarity and two color swatch, and you undoubtedly have a winner.

#6: 2001-02 BAP Update Passing the Torch King Clancy / Mats Sundin / Tim Horton (/25)

This card just amazed me. 4 packs of BAP stuff in the last week, 3 amazing pulls. Wow, just look at this beauty. It has Clancy's vintage glove on there, some older Horton jersey, and then a nice Sundin swatch in the middle. Three's a crowd? I don't think so!

#5: 2001-02 BAP Signature Guy Lafleur 500 Goal Scorers Autographed Jersey (/10)

In addition to its rarity and sweetness, this pull here was a real box-saver. I was pulling Chris Herperger and Wayne Primeau and such autos from this box and getting quite annoyed with it. Finally, with about 4 packs to go, this Lafleur popped up and added some joy to the box. So it not only is out of only 10, has a jersey and auto of a popular hall of famer ... but it also salvaged an otherwise miserable box.

#4: 1999-00 Topps Gold Label Marian Hossa Fresh Gold Gold Label 1/1

You what this guy's poor problem is? It just doesn't have a cool story. From firmly planted #1 to #4 in 6 months. I feel so sorry for this card ... until I look at the 3 that beat it. This card will always be the first #1 though ... the first cornerstone pull, even if it is falling rapidly.

#3: 1997-98 Donruss Preferred Marian Hossa RC & Cut to the Chase

Two cards in one here, but both intertwined. I got one box of Donruss Preferred and after being tricked by an evil Yashin silver, managed to find the Hossa RC and the Hossa Cut to the Chase in back to back packs. And I would have been plenty happy with either one ... back to back packs though was just incredible.

#2: 2003-04 Topps Pristine Pristine Patches Refractor Justin Williams (5/10)

Wow, a card that actually managed to rival the Drury triple jersey. Unforetunately the one color patch and lack of a bargain bin left this one a hair behind the #1 spot. Still though, it's a high end Williams patch numbered to only TEN ... and I somehow managed to pull it. I am in awe.

#1: 2001-02 Stadium Club Chris Drury / Joe Sakic / Peter Forsberg Triple Souvenir Jerseys (12/25)

From the bargain bin on the floor of a baseball card shop to #1 in the best pulls page. Quite an interesting little journey for a couple of packs that were just supposed to yield RCs for my set. Top hobby target stuck on a jersey card with those Forsberg and Sakic guys (I hear they're pretty good too!) numbered to only 25. All that plus the cool story? I can't wait to see what (if anything) will beat this one!
