Jiu-Jitsu is the oldest of all martial arts. It was invented in India more than 2.000 years before Christ. Then it spread through China and finally through Japan. In 1914 Mitsui Maeda Koma , the great Japanese champion, came to Brazil to stablish an imigration colony. There he was aided by Gastão Gracie. To show his gratitude, "Count Koma" thaught Jiu-jitsu's basic secrets to Gastão's son Carlos Gracie. Carlos, who was interested in streetfighting, quickly modified the classical techniques to meet the demands of real "no rules" fighting. Carlos then, thaught his younger brothers Oswaldo, Gastão Jr.,Jorge and Helio. In 1925 the first Gracie Academy was opened in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. From there on, the Gracie style of Jiu-Jitsu spread throughout Brazil and also throughout the world. What made it real famous in Japan and in USA, were the "no rules" fight contests (Japan Open, UFC, etc.)In these events Gracie representatives have consistently demonstrated , many times, against titlie holders from other martial arts styles, that this is the most effective fighting art in the world nowadays. That's why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the hottest kind of martial arts today.
