Art Imitates Life

Steve Yzerman and family are spending the summer at a cabin formerly owned by hockey builder legend Conn Smythe. Yzerman purchased the cabin prior to the playoffs. Perhaps he was making a silent statement before making an extremely loud one. Just a few months after purchasing the cabin, Yzerman hoisted the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP.

Brown Snatched

Doug Brown, who joined last year's playoff run late, but provided a major contribution to each of the Red Wings' recent Cup wins, was selected by Nashville in the NHL expansion draft. Detroit would have loved to protect Brown, and may have been their next protected player had they had another slot at forward. Protected were Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov, Brendan Shanahan, Igor Larionov, Marty Lapointe and Darren McCarty. Good luck to Dougie Brown in Nashville.

Assistant GM Steps Down and then Back Up

Red Wings assistant GM for the past 2 seasons, Don Wadell, resigned from the Red Wings to join Atlanta's front office as full GM. He will be replaced by Red Wings chief scout and Adirondack Wings GM Jim Nill.

Krupp Joins Wings

Uwe Krupp signed with Detroit on July 6. He will wear the number formerly worn by Jamie Pushor before he was traded to the Ducks, #4. While on paper, this move improves the Red Wings, it remains to be seen how much another premier defenseman will affect Detroit's already heavily talented defense corps. Could be another Dmitri Mironov. Could be another Lidstrom or Murphy. Mironov, Bob Rouse and Slava Fetisov's futures with the Wings are up in the air, due to the signing of Krupp and the competition for spots with young talents like Maxim Kuznetsov, Aaron Ward, Anders Erikkson, Yan Gulobovsky and Jesse Wallin.
