Bar of the Month:
Max's Tavern- Finally, a place where rabid Simpsons fans and slacking coeds can enjoy a cool, refreshing Duff.

The state of Oregon is a Simpsons-lover’s paradise. Drive around Portland—where series creator Matt Groening grew up—and you’ll find yourself on streets named Flanders, Lovejoy, and Quimby. Groening also spent some time in Eugene, which may explain why Max’s Tavern, a University of Oregon haunt since the ’30s, bears more than a passing resemblance to a certain animated watering hole. “Moe’s is pretty much an amalgam of Max’s and maybe two other places,” says Chase Fairbairn, the bar’s owner for nearly a decade. “We have a picture of people in the bar watching Nixon’s resignation [around the time Groening attended college], and it looks a lot like Moe’s.” Even if the tavern’s rightful place in ’toon history may be hard to validate—Groening ain’t talking—it’s still a top spot to meet girls so drunk they’d get it on in the parking lot with Barney. “This is the ultimate neighborhood bar. Classic, but not classy,” says Fairbairn.
